👣 Sometimes, the feet tell a story that words cannot.
When we care for someone we love, we naturally focus on their comfort, safety, medication, nutrition and general wellbeing. But there is one area of the body that can easily be overlooked: their feet 👣
For individuals living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, diabetes, neuropathy or other neurological conditions, recognising or communicating pain and discomfort isn’t always straightforward.
Some may experience reduced sensation, while others may struggle to express that something doesn’t feel right.
And just because someone isn’t complaining of pain, it doesn’t necessarily mean everything is fine.
A small area of pressure, excessive hard skin, a blister or a tiny break in the skin can sometimes develop into a much more serious problem without obvious warning signs.
The good news is that a few simple checks can make a real difference. ❤️
👣 Take a moment to look at the soles of the feet and between the toes.
👣 Check for redness, swelling, blisters, broken skin or unusual changes.
👣 Pay attention to thickened nails, excessive hard skin and areas of persistent moisture.
👣 Make regular foot checks part of everyday personal care, particularly for those who may not recognise or communicate discomfort.
This isn’t about blame or what anyone should have noticed sooner. Caring for someone with additional needs comes with countless responsibilities, and it’s impossible to be aware of everything.
It’s simply about raising awareness of something small that can have a significant impact.
Healthy feet help preserve mobility, independence, dignity and quality of life.
Sometimes, the most important signs are the ones our loved ones cannot tell us about.
If you notice a wound, ulcer or concerning change, seek prompt assessment from an appropriate healthcare professional.
