The Process of Tattoo Removal
Laser tattoo removal typically takes 8 months to 2 years to complete.
This tattoo has almost been removed and will need 1-2 sessions within the clinic. It’s a long process when done safely. There are different factors that impact the removal of a tattoo.
Number of Sessions
• Average Range: Most tattoos require 6 to 12 sessions for significant or complete clearance.
• Healing Interval: Sessions are usually spaced 6 to 12 weeks apart to give your immune system time to flush out the broken-down ink particles.
• By Size:
• Small tattoos take about 3 to 5 sessions (a few months).
• Medium tattoos take 6 to 12 sessions.
• Large tattoos or full sleeves can take 10+ sessions spread over 2 years or more.
Key Factors That Affect the Timeline
• Ink Color: Black and dark blue ink fade the fastest because they absorb all light wavelengths. Bright colors (like green, yellow, red, or white) are harder to clear and need more sessions.
• Body Location: Tattoos on the chest, neck, or back fade faster due to better blood circulation. Tattoos on the extremities (like fingers, feet, or ankles) take longer.
• Tattoo Age & Depth: Older tattoos fade slightly faster because the body has already begun breaking down the ink over time. Professional tattoos are often deeper and denser than amateur ones, requiring more treatments.
• Skin Tone: Darker skin tones require lower laser energy settings to protect the skin pigment, which can extend the overall treatment course.
