How healthy is your heart? An NHS Health Check can help you understand your risk of cardiovascular disease. ❤️

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) includes conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, such as heart disease and stroke. Your risk can be influenced by several factors, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, age and family history. Some factors cannot be changed, but there are important steps you can take to reduce your overall risk.

An NHS Health Check is a free check of your cardiovascular health. It usually includes checking your blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as discussing your family history, physical activity, smoking, alcohol use and other factors that may affect your health. 🩺

High blood pressure and high cholesterol often have no symptoms, so having them checked can help identify potential problems before you know anything is wrong.

NHS Health Checks are generally offered every five years to eligible people aged 40 to 74 who do not already have certain pre-existing conditions. If you're eligible but haven't been invited, you can contact your GP practice. 💙

Breast screening can help find breast cancer before you notice any signs or symptoms. 🎀

NHS breast screening uses X-rays called mammograms to look for breast cancers that may be too small to see or feel. Finding breast cancer earlier can mean treatment is more likely to be successful.

If you're eligible for NHS breast screening, you'll be invited when it's time for your appointment. When you receive your invitation, please take the time to read the information provided and arrange your screening.

Screening is for people without symptoms. If you notice a new lump, changes to the size or shape of your breast, ni**le or skin changes, or anything else that is unusual for you, do not wait for your next screening invitation – contact your GP. 💗

For people with a physical disability or limited mobility, staying active can sometimes require a different approach, but there are many ways to adapt exercise around your individual abilities and needs.

Physical activity can support heart health, strength, joints, maintaining a healthy weight and mental wellbeing. Everyday movements can also form part of staying active, and exercises can often be adapted so they can be completed seated or with mobility aids.

Start with manageable activities, listen to your body and gradually build up what you do. There is no single exercise plan that will suit everyone, so consider speaking to a healthcare professional before starting a new exercise routine if you're unsure what is appropriate for you. 🩺

Focus on what you can do and find activities that work for your body. Every bit of movement counts. 💙

Did you know you can manage appointments through the NHS App? 📱💙

The NHS App can make it easier to keep track of your healthcare. Depending on the services available through your GP surgery and healthcare providers, you can view upcoming appointments, manage GP appointments and access information about hospital and specialist appointments.

For patients who use British Sign Language (BSL), NHS App guidance videos include the option to turn on BSL, including a video explaining how to manage upcoming GP and hospital appointments. 🤟

Using the app can also make it easier to cancel an appointment you no longer need, helping the appointment become available for someone else. If you need to change a GP appointment, you may need to cancel it and book a new one. 📅

Flu season is here – would you know the symptoms and what to do if you become unwell? 🤒

Flu symptoms usually come on quickly and can include a sudden high temperature, an aching body, feeling very tired or exhausted, a dry cough, sore throat, headache, difficulty sleeping and loss of appetite. Some people may also experience diarrhoea, tummy pain, nausea or vomiting.

If you have flu, most people can look after themselves at home. Get plenty of rest and sleep, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, and consider paracetamol or ibuprofen for a temperature, aches and pains if these medicines are suitable for you. A pharmacist can also offer advice about treatments and flu remedies. 💧🛌

Try to stay at home and avoid contact with others if you have a high temperature, feel hot, cold or shivery, or are not well enough to carry out your usual activities. 🏠

Seek medical advice if you feel very unwell, become short of breath, your symptoms have not improved after 7 days, or you're in a group at higher risk of becoming seriously ill.

October is National Cholesterol Month – do you know your cholesterol levels? ❤️

High cholesterol means you have too much cholesterol in your blood. It does not usually cause symptoms, so a blood test is the only way to find out if your cholesterol is high. Left unmanaged, it can contribute to blocked blood vessels and increase your risk of heart problems and stroke. 🩺

There are positive steps you can take to help manage your cholesterol. Eating a balanced diet, being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight and stopping smoking can all support your heart health. Some people may also need cholesterol-lowering medication. 🥗🚶‍♀️

This National Cholesterol Month, take some time to think about your heart health and find out whether you should have your cholesterol checked. ❤️

Sinusitis causing pain, pressure or a blocked nose? Your local pharmacy may be able to help. 💊

Sinusitis is swelling of the sinuses, often following a cold or flu. Symptoms can include pain or tenderness around the cheeks, eyes or forehead, a blocked or runny nose, reduced sense of smell, headache and green or yellow mucus. 🤧

Through Pharmacy First, eligible patients can speak to a pharmacist about sinusitis without needing to see their GP first. A pharmacist can assess your symptoms, provide advice and, where appropriate, offer treatment or direct you to other medical support. 🩺

Mild sinusitis will often clear by itself within four weeks. Resting, drinking plenty of fluids and using suitable pain relief can help manage symptoms while you recover. 💙

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a reminder to be breast aware and know what is normal for you. 🎀

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in the UK, but anyone can get breast cancer, including men.

Get to know how your breasts or chest normally look and feel. Changes to look out for can include a new lump or swelling, changes in the size or shape of a breast, skin changes such as dimpling, changes to the ni**le, unusual ni**le discharge or persistent pain.

Most breast changes are not cancer, but it's important to contact your GP if you notice something that's new or unusual for you. Don't wait to see if it goes away on its own.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is also an opportunity to encourage the people around you to be breast aware and seek advice if something doesn't feel right. 🎀💗

This World Mental Health Day, remember that movement is for everybody. 💚

Physical activity can be a positive way to support both physical and mental wellbeing, and being active should be accessible and enjoyable for disabled children and young people too.

There is no single right way to get moving. Activities can be adapted around individual abilities, interests and needs. This might include swimming, accessible cycling, boccia, wheelchair sports, adapted games or simply enjoying time outdoors. Small changes such as using softer or larger balls, shortening distances or reducing the length of an activity can make movement more accessible.

The most important thing is finding something that works for you or your family and that you enjoy. Being active can also provide opportunities to have fun, spend time together and connect with other people. 💚

This World Mental Health Day, celebrate movement in all its forms and remember that every body can move in its own way. ♿

Chest infections can be serious – and prevention matters, especially as we head into colder months. 🫁💙

Chest infections affect the lungs or large airways. Common symptoms include a chesty cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, a high temperature, headaches, aching muscles and tiredness. Many improve within around 7–10 days, although a cough can last for up to three weeks.

Respiratory illness also places significant pressure on the NHS. Respiratory disease accounts for around 700,000 hospital admissions and 6 million inpatient bed days each year, with demand often peaking during winter.

Damp and mould can affect your lungs too. Damp and mould in the home can increase the risk of respiratory infections and worsen conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and COPD. Government estimates linked damp and mould in English homes with around 8,500 lower respiratory infections in 2019.

Help reduce moisture at home by ventilating rooms, using extractor fans, avoiding drying clothes indoors where possible and dealing with leaks promptly. A dehumidifier can help remove excess moisture from the air, but it's also important to identify and address the underlying cause of damp or mould.

If you have a chest infection and feel very unwell, your symptoms are getting worse, you cough up blood, or you've had a cough for more than three weeks, contact your GP. You should also seek advice if you're pregnant, over 65, have a weakened immune system or have a long-term heart, lung or kidney condition.
