🎉🌱 WE’RE DOUBLE FINALISTS! 🌱🎉

We are absolutely delighted to share some very exciting news - Acorn Personal Development Centre has been selected as a finalist in TWO categories at the 2026 Yorkshire, Humberside & North East Family Business Awards! 🏆🏆

We are finalists for:

🌱 Emerging Family Business
❤️ Social Impact Award

To be recognised in not one, but two categories means so much to us.

Acorn was created with a clear vision - to provide opportunities for the adults we support to develop independence, confidence, friendships and practical life skills, while being active and valued members of their community.

Being a finalist for the Social Impact Award feels particularly special, because it reflects so much of what Acorn is about - the people who attend, the progress they make, the things they achieve and the experiences we get to share with them. ❤️

And being recognised as an Emerging Family Business is something we are incredibly proud of too, especially when we think about how far Acorn has come since we first opened our doors. 🌱

A huge thank you to all our individuals, families and carers for putting your trust in Acorn, and to everyone who follows, supports and encourages us. You are all such an important part of our journey.

🏛️ A Step Back in Time at Beck Isle Museum!

Last Monday, we enjoyed a fantastic visit to Beck Isle Museum in Pickering.

There was so much to see and explore, from old-fashioned shops and household items to displays showing what everyday life was like in years gone by.

The visit brought plenty of nostalgia too, with people recognising items they remembered seeing in their parents’ or grandparents’ homes. It sparked some lovely conversations and gave everyone the chance to share memories and stories.

It was also really interesting to compare the past with the present - looking at everyday objects and discovering how much things such as shopping, household chores, technology and daily life have changed over the years.

Visits like this provide so many opportunities for learning, conversation, reminiscence and social interaction, all while enjoying a day out together in the community.

A lovely day with plenty of “I remember one of those!” moments along the way. 😊

🌱 Harvest Time at Acorn 🍅🥔

Last week at Acorn, we made the most of the final harvest from our homegrown produce. Our group dug up the last of this year’s potatoes, as well as harvesting plenty of our tomatoes and beetroot.

🍅 Our homegrown tomatoes were turned into a delicious tomato chutney, while our beetroot was prepared and pickled in jars. Everything has now been safely stored away to mature, ready for us to enjoy over the coming weeks and months.

It’s been lovely seeing the whole process through this year - planting, growing, harvesting, preparing and preserving our own produce. A brilliant way to build practical life skills while enjoying the results of all that hard work! 🌱

🍂 Celebrating Heritage Week at Acorn 🍂

We’ve had a fantastic week exploring local history, heritage and traditions.

We started with a visit to Hornsea Museum, stepping back in time and discovering how people lived and worked in years gone by.

Closer to home, we explored Driffield Then & Now, using old photographs to find familiar locations and compare how the town has changed over the years. 📷

We also explored some traditional Yorkshire and British favourites through our cooking sessions, making Yorkshire Fat Rascals and finishing the week with homemade apple crumble. 🍎🥧

Alongside our Heritage Week activities, we still enjoyed some of our regular sessions, including swimming and Paddle.

A lovely week combining local history, community access, cooking and life skills, physical activity and plenty of opportunities to learn together. 🌳

We’ve been a little quiet on social media recently… but we can promise you, we certainly haven’t been quiet behind the scenes!

It’s been another really busy week at Acorn, with lots going on both at our base and out in our local communities.

Today has been the perfect way to round off a busy week!

🐾 One group enjoyed a community visit to a local dog groomers, where they had the opportunity to see a little of what happens during a normal working day.

🌱 Back at Acorn, we’ve been busy watering and looking after our produce. While we were outside, our donkeys and horse wandered over to see what was happening, along with one of the cats. Some of our group also spent a little time brushing our own dogs while they were with us. 🫏🐴🐈🐶

🥾 Another group headed into Beverley to complete the Guild Trail, exploring the town and enjoying a picnic along the way.

🌊 Meanwhile, another group visited Bridlington and came across the vintage car show ahead of Race the Waves taking place on Bridlington beach this weekend. 🚗🏁

Different groups, different opportunities and another week full of community access, independence, life skills and plenty of fun.

We might have been quiet on here recently, but life at Acorn has been anything but! 🌳

🌿♻️ Making a Difference in Our Community! ♻️🌿

This morning, two of our Acorn groups headed out into the local community for some litter picking — and what a fantastic job they did! 👏💚

Everyone got stuck in, working together to help keep our local area clean and tidy. Their fantastic efforts didn’t go unnoticed either, with our groups receiving some lovely praise for the difference they were making! 🥰👏

Litter picking is a brilliant activity for developing teamwork, communication, confidence and independence, as well as encouraging a sense of responsibility and pride in our local community. It also gets everyone out in the fresh air, keeping active while learning valuable life skills. 🌳☀️

A brilliant morning, lots of hard work and something everyone can feel really proud of! 💚♻️

🌱🍑 A productive Friday at Acorn! 🍑🌱

On Friday, some of our groups got stuck into repotting plants, developing their gardening skills and helping to keep everything growing beautifully. 🌿🪴

Meanwhile, another group made use of the fantastic produce growing right here at Acorn. Our Victoria plums from the orchard were picked, de-stoned and turned into some absolutely delicious homemade plum crumbles to take home and enjoy! 😋🥧

Activities like these give the people we support opportunities to develop practical skills, work together and experience the whole process of growing, harvesting, preparing and cooking our own produce. 🌳➡️🍑➡️🥧

🍎🌳 Homegrown at Acorn 🌳🍎

Our Victoria plum trees are absolutely laden with fruit this year, and the apples & Pears are coming along beautifully too!

Growing our own fruit is a great addition to life at Acorn, giving the people we support opportunities to be involved throughout the seasons - from caring for the trees and watching the fruit develop, through to harvesting and deciding how we’re going to use it.

We’ve already picked a fantastic crop of Victoria plums, with plenty more still on the trees. Now to put them to good use… 😋

Nothing quite beats produce grown and picked right here at Acorn.

🏅 Good luck to everyone from our group who has chosen to take part in the Lions Doncaster Disability Games today! 🏅

Today is about so much more than winning. It’s about taking part, building confidence, trying something new, supporting one another, and making lasting memories.

The Lions Doncaster Disability Games is always a fantastic event and one that many of our participants look forward to each year. While taking part isn’t for everyone, we’re incredibly proud of those who have chosen to represent us today.

With an early start and a busy day ahead, we hope you all have an amazing time, enjoy every moment, make new friends, and celebrate everything you achieve.

Most of all, have fun, encourage one another, and remember that taking part is an achievement in itself.
