I’ve had some interesting conversations around sound in classes recently, and it seems especially potent having just begun a round of advanced sound healer training.
I am very much in the for music camp. I LOVE music. Yes, I still spend my time listening to the emo bands I grew up watching at gigs pretty much every week as a teenager, and live music is still one of my favourite things to experience.
There has always been sound. The beginning of the universe is literally called the Big Bang. Our sense of hearing is the first of our senses to develop in the womb.
Through millennia we have understood the importance of sharing our stories with our voices, through song, with the sounds of the drum replicating the sound of our beating hearts.
So many cultures have gathered around fires singing, and dancing, and making music. Moving their bodies and creating energy.
For we have so much energy in us, when it becomes stuck, that’s when we feel stuck. Our emotions are literally energy in motion. We stop moving, we stop expressing, we stop altogether.
Music, sound has always been the thing to shift this for me. Whether I’m on a night out listening to some very questionable dance music, or belting out some random noughties emo lyric whilst doing the washing I ALWAYS feel better for it.
The music I use in my sessions is there for this reason. Whether it’s a soft, ethereal track in restorative to help calm your mind, a certain frequency in massage to help your nervous system finally exhale, or a forgotten indie banger in reformer to push you through those last few pulses, it’s there to guide your journey.
Yes, silence has its place. And I very much use it. Because there is expansion and realisation in silence that is very much needed. But silence only really does its deep work when it’s built up to. When the sounds slowly fade and your body can comfortably let go in their absence.
Enforced silence can be tense, triggering, and even though sometimes we need to acknowledge what that’s bringing up for us, when I sometimes only see my students for 45 minutes of reformer, that’s not the lesson I want you to take away.
So, please, keep those song requests coming 🖤
