Redwing Counselling I’m Alison, a counsellor, artist and practicing GP.

In my work at Redwing Counselling, I’m here in the role purely of a therapist, offering a calm, safe space, for people who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unheard.

How do you recharge your batteries?

Modern life demands we do everything, spinning plates and doing it with a big smile on our faces.

Working, parenting, cleaning, laundry, taxiing kids, being a good friend, partner, work colleague, the pressure of caring responsibilities, cooking highly nutritious meals, getting exercise, getting 8 hours of sleep, meditating, looking fabulous… you get the idea.

Why do we need to be all of these things? We don’t!

We are important. We deserve kindness from others and from ourselves. Fitting in self care is hard but it can be anything. Even the commute to work with no kids arguing and your own music on… It doesn’t need to be a spa weekend.

You deserve it 🫶🏻

The past moulds us, be it consciously or subconsciously. Our childhood, life experiences, work, relationships amongst others impact how we think, feel and do. Some of this is positive, but some can hold us back. Counselling can help bring the subconscious up to conscious and help us find your way forward on your own terms.

I picked this photo, an old phone box on Coll, as many people of my generation will have stories and past experiences of conversations had from one of these. Mine were usually reverse charged calls to home when I found myself stuck in Kirkcaldy without a lift home!

It’s been an emotional week here for Redwing Counselling. I had my last ever client session for my voluntary placement at fifewomensaid_ on Tuesday.

I have been working for them for over 18 months. What an incredible organisation. I am beyond grateful for their help on my counselling journey 🍃

Time for resets. Your brain needs care and kindness.

This doesn’t need to be a trip to New York, or an expensive spa weekend in Italy. This can simply be a pause. A 5 minute gap between clients spent doing nothing. Or for me this week, a week on a remote Inner Hebridean Island. Today it’s pouring with rain. But there’s huge beauty in being forced to stay indoors and have some silence and this time to reset.

I’m a pluralistic counsellor, but what on earth does that mean?

🙋‍♀️ Shared Decision-Making

Therapists and clients decide the best goals, tasks, and methods together.

🤓 The client is the expert!

🧘‍♀️ Flexibility

I draw on multiple theories—such as person-centred, psychodynamic, or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)—rather than sticking to just one school of thought.

🗝️ No Single Truth

Pluralism accepts that different theories work for different people at different times. They know their own experiences and preferences best.

So I mix it up to work for us as a team but you as an individual and as the expert 🧠

Suicidal thoughts are difficult to bring up. But it’s a common symptom of mental ill health and it will never trigger someone to act. Evidence shows quite opposite.

Check in with that person. They will be relieved to be heard.

This week is Su***de Prevention Awareness Week.

If you're worried about someone, it can feel difficult to know what to say. You might worry about saying the wrong thing – but asking directly can make a difference.

Ask. Listen. Keep safe.

Fife's Health Promotion Service is supporting What If, the national campaign from Su***de Prevention Scotland, with practical guidance on how to ask someone: “Are you thinking about suicide?”

I’ve been thinking about how people often assume they need to be “really struggling” before reaching out.
But most of the meaningful shifts I see begin long before crisis — in the small, quiet moments where someone realises they don’t have to keep going exactly as they have been.
Therapy can start there.

A contract is essential with clients. It can feel a bit formal and perhaps overwhelming, but is essential for you to feel safe for your therapy.

A small pause in the middle of the day. Nothing dramatic. Just a moment where the noise drops a little and you can feel yourself arrive again.

I doodle. If I don’t have time for lunch in my GP job, I’ll simply get a pen and paper out and make marks. Often nonsense, but a wonderful bit of mindfulness amongst a busy day.

What is your go to?
Is this something you fit into your day?

There’s a moment I see often in people who’ve been coping for a long time: the quiet realisation that what they’ve been calling “tired” is actually something deeper.

Not a failure. Not a flaw. Just a system that’s been carrying too much, too steadily, for too long.

Noticing it is usually the first shift. We all deserve to have the space to explore these difficulties with no judgement in a safe space.
