A gentle look back at summer 🌿

Nettles gathered from the edges of our Meadow, carefully placed into our copper still, and transformed through steam distillation into a hydrosol.

This traditional process captures the nettle’s water-soluble compounds, preserving a little of the Meadow’s abundance for the colder months ahead. The resulting hydrosol becomes the foundation of several of our skincare products, connecting what we make directly to the land we care for.

From Meadow to still, from still to skincare - a little piece of summer, carried through the seasons.

Let us know in the comments if you want to know more about our processes here at Seilich!

Delighted to be on Changing Climate, Changing Midlothian podcast Midlothian Council. You can listen to it via the link in my bio. I would love to know your thoughts on this conversation! So please have a listen and let me know.

Here’s more information on the podcast ep:

Dr Sally Gouldstone, Founder of Seilich, a wildlife friendly herbal tea and skincare company near Pathhead, talks with host Osbert Lancaster. Listen to hear how botanist Sally became so frustrated with traditional nature conservation projects that she decided to try a different approach – and created a new kind of business that thrives when nature thrives.

Sally reflects on journey that’s been both tough and rewarding, talking about:

-how “natural” products aren’t always good for nature
-how a genuinely wildlife friendly business approach regenerates nature
-why luxury products should be held to the highest environmental standards
-advice and lessons for other green businesses looking for investment and support
-how other farmers and landowners can get involved with this approach
and much more…

Changing Climate, Changing Midlothian explores what the climate and nature emergency means with people living and working in the county. Their reflections will help inform discussions as cross sector representatives and community leaders meet in October to agree a new Single Midlothian Plan setting collective outcomes and actions for the next three years.

Winter Skincare, straight from the Meadow…

Meadow botanicals that help soothe, nourish and protect your skin through the colder months.

There is a lot to love about winter. Frosty mornings, woolly jumpers, fires, long walks and coming home to somewhere warm. Our skin, however, isn’t always quite so enthusiastic.

Cold air, wind and the constant move between chilly weather and centrally heated rooms can leave skin feeling dry, tight, sensitive and generally in need of a little extra care.

This is the time of year when we reach for some of the most comforting plants in our meadow. Botanicals traditionally used to soothe and care for skin, combined with nourishing plant oils that help replenish the moisture our skin can struggle to hold onto through winter.

You can read our full winter skincare guide via the link in our bio.

Why do we scythe the meadow?

Scything is a gentle, low-impact way to care for wildflower meadows, giving wildflowers more space to thrive and creating better habitat for insects, pollinators and other wildlife.

It’s quiet, fuel-free and much kinder to the meadow than mowing and there’s something pretty special about working alongside nature.

Naomi our wonderful gardener has been out scything the meadow recently, helping to keep this beautiful patch of land rich in wildflowers and wildlife and look at how much meadow we have mowed by scythe this year!!!
