Blocked ears after a cold? 👂🤧

That muffled, “underwater” feeling is common after a cold. Swelling around the Eustachian tube can affect pressure in the middle ear, and sometimes the problem may actually be earwax or an ear infection.

Most cold-related ear symptoms settle with time. But if your hearing suddenly drops, gets rapidly worse or is much worse in one ear, don’t assume it’s simply congestion. NHS advice is to seek urgent medical help for sudden hearing loss.

Our latest article explains:

👂 Why colds can make your ears feel blocked
👂 How earwax can cause very similar symptoms
👂 What you should avoid doing at home
👂 When it’s sensible to get your ears checked
👂 When a hearing change needs urgent attention

Keep the water out. Keep swimming.

For some people, water in the ears can cause discomfort or recurring ear problems. Custom swim plugs are made from an impression of your ears, giving a comfortable, secure fit to help keep water out while you swim.

They can be a good option for regular swimmers, children with grommets, or anyone who has been advised to avoid getting water in their ears.

At Fairfield Hearing, we also provide custom ear protection for musicians, noisy workplaces and sleep.

Book a fitting and find the right protection for your ears.

One of the first signs that your hearing may be changing can appear somewhere unexpected. At a comedy show.

You hear most of the story. You follow the build-up. Then everyone bursts out laughing and you realise you didn’t quite catch the punchline.

With the Edinburgh Festival in full swing, it’s a good time to think about how well you’re hearing live performances, conversations and all those moments you don’t get a chance to rewind.

If you’re regularly missing punchlines or key words, it could be worth having your hearing checked.

Whether you're flying abroad, swimming every day or simply relaxing by the pool, your ears can face a few extra challenges while you're away. A little preparation can make all the difference.

A little preparation can make all the difference.

If you wear hearing aids, remember to pack your charger or spare batteries, keep your devices dry and avoid leaving them in direct sunshine or a hot car. Even if you don't wear hearing aids, protecting your ears from excessive noise and looking after them while swimming can help prevent problems when you get home.

Planning ahead means you can spend less time worrying about your ears and more time enjoying your holiday.

Our latest blog shares practical tips to help keep your hearing healthy while you're away.
