🌟 BioQuarter Spotlight 🌟

Part of The University of Edinburgh, the Queen’s Medical Research Institute (QMRI) brings scientists and clinicians together to better understand some of today’s biggest health challenges. 🔬

From cancer and heart and lung disease to reproductive health and inflammatory conditions, researchers at QMRI are working to improve our understanding of disease and help shape better approaches to treatment and care.

To support this work, the Institute is home to specialist facilities including advanced microscopy, mass spectrometry and human imaging.

With many of QMRI’s academic clinicians also working directly with patients, it’s a great example of how bringing research and healthcare together can help discoveries move closer to making a difference to people’s lives.

Our BioQuarter community is growing!

We’re excited to welcome Lypo, the latest life sciences company to join the incubator facilities at Building Nine. 👋

The Edinburgh-based biotechnology company develops innovative lipid-based delivery technologies designed to improve how medicines and therapeutic compounds are delivered within the body. By helping enhance the effectiveness and accessibility of treatments, the company is working at the forefront of innovation in healthcare and life sciences.

Lypo’s arrival brings even more expertise to our growing community and opens up new opportunities for businesses, researchers and innovators to connect and collaborate.

Speaking about the move, Lisa Hannon, Team Leader of Property and Growth Infrastructure at Scottish Enterprisee said: “It’s fantastic to see another innovative life sciences company choosing Nine as its home. Lypo’s arrival adds further momentum to the growing community at BioQuarter and underlines the strength of the ecosystem we are continuing to build.”

A very warm welcome to the Lypo team - we’re looking forward to seeing what comes next! 👏

Last month, we welcomed Miles Briggs MSP and Universities Scotland to the Institute for Regeneration and Repair (IRR) at Edinburgh BioQuarter.

During the visit, they met colleagues from The University of Edinburgh to discuss the future of health and social care research in Scotland, including the Scottish Health and Biomedical Institute and Edinburgh Medical School 300.

Following discussions with Professor Julie Jacko, Chief Academic Officer of the Usher Institute, visitors got a tour of IRR’s world-class research facilities from Professor David Dockrell, Director of the Centre for Inflammation Research.

Along the way, the team shared information about research spanning regenerative medicine, inflammation and reproductive health, and how discoveries made in the lab are being translated into new treatments that can benefit patients. 🧬

It was a great opportunity to showcase some of the life-changing research happening here at BioQuarter and the people shaping the future of health.

Would your little one be able to draw your job? 🎨

We asked the children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren of people who work at Building Nine to show us what they think their loved ones get up to at work - and the results have certainly brightened up our walls!

From labs and offices to their own imaginative interpretations, the drawings offer a wonderful glimpse of BioQuarter through younger eyes.

Now proudly displayed near the cafe, the artwork celebrates the incredible people who make up our BioQuarter community and the important work they do every day. 🧪

Recognise your little artist's handiwork? Let us know what your job is in the comments.

✨ BioQuarter Spotlight ✨

Did you know the Institute for Regeneration and Repair (IRR) is home to researchers working to tackle some of the world’s biggest health challenges, including cancer?

Based at Edinburgh BioQuarter, the IRR brings together scientists, clinicians and industry partners to develop new ways to treat and prevent disease. From regenerative medicine and reproductive health to inflammation and cancer research, their work is helping shape the future of healthcare.

What makes the IRR so special is its close connection with the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, allowing researchers and healthcare professionals to work side by side to turn discoveries into real benefits for patients.

It’s another brilliant example of the collaboration and innovation happening every day across Edinburgh BioQuarter.

Yesterday, we hosted Kaitlyn Bodsworth, a high school technician and trainee teacher intern who is working alongside the BioQuarter Community Impact Team on an exciting partnership to develop new practical resources for the Higher Human Biology curriculum. The project is part of the Edinburgh Medical School 300 programme.

The collaboration with SSERC will contribute to the creation of new experiment protocols that will be shared with teachers across Scotland and incorporated into future Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions.

During the visit, Kaitlynn met researchers from the Institute for Regeneration and Repair and The University of Edinburgh's Institute for Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research, whose work uses techniques such as protein electrophoresis, and topics such as diabetes and fat digestion. Conversations like these are incredibly valuable in highlighting how to connect real biomedical research that takes place here at BioQuarter to science learning in the classroom. 🏫

Hands-on science is a powerful way to spark curiosity, build confidence and encourage more young people to consider careers in STEM. We're proud to support partnerships like this that connect education with real-world research and inspire the next generation of scientists. 👨‍🔬

Celebrating 10 years of our Summer Internship Programme!

Last week, a group of young people from four local schools completed internships across the Institute for Regeneration and Repair and The University of Edinburgh's Institute for Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research.

From gaining hands-on experience in research labs to exploring careers in clinical studies and medical imaging, the programme gave the interns a valuable insight into the many pathways available within science and healthcare.

The programme concluded with a celebration event, where each intern shared what they had learned with family, friends, mentors and colleagues.

Over the past ten years, this programme has grown from a single internship into an opportunity that has inspired local young people to explore STEM careers and ensure access to opportunities isn't defined by postcode.

A huge thank you to our interns, internship hosts, mentors and partners, including funding partners SSERC, for helping make this year's programme such a success. We can't wait to see what our interns do next! 🌟
