36 YEARS OF BEING HERE FOR YOU Health All Round is a registered charity and voluntary sector agency which aims to support people living in Gorgie Dalry, Saughton, Stenhouse and surrounding areas of Edinburgh to live longer, healthier lives. Using a community development approach we provide services focusing on physical, social and emotional wellbeing and aim to build social capital and reduce inequalities within the city of Edinburgh. We are able to provide a wide range of services because we involve local people in all that we do – through volunteering, through consultation and by working together to meet the whole community’s needs. We deliver a range of free or low cost services to improve people’s physical, social and mental wellbeing and 200 – 250 people access HAR services every week.

80% people accessing HAR services have a long term health condition or disability. Since our establishment in 1989 our evaluation, including before and after scores, has demonstrated the effectiveness of our services in helping people to feel and live better.

Here at Health All Round we have three Community Link Workers (CLW's) on the team. They are Calum, Joanna and Maebh and some of you will probably know them.
They are embedded in local medical practices and their role is to help folk and provide non-medical support, so they will listen to you and chat about everyday concerns that affect people’s health and wellbeing, such as loneliness, isolation, housing, money worries, family life. The stuff that can affect us all at some point in our lives.
They help to connect patients with local organisations like Health All Round, to support access to activities, support groups, adult education classes, volunteering opportunities, and welfare advice services.
Indispensable stuff really.
A key aspect of their work is to offer practical help and support. Their work is vital and they get amazing results as the tables below illustrate.
We are very proud to see Health All Round featured with so many referrals and signposts – a real credit to the hard work of our Community Link Workers. It also provides great evidence of the important role that local, embedded community-based organisations play in community health.

This week our fantastic Women On The Loose group headed back to the amazing Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life to see some of the stuff that we missed last time.
We loved the Immersive Room which was a whole new level of fun.

It's well worth the trip as it's all free, the staff are really nice and welcoming and the cafe is excellent. All this only an hour from Edinburgh on the train.

Did you know that Health All Round runs a meditation group?

This relaxed group is open to everyone and happens twice per month – once at the Art and Spirituality Centre (or sometimes outside in the summer!) and once online, for those who are not able to make it in person.
We offer ways of calming your busy mind and taking a bit of control over those feisty thoughts. What's more, you don't need to come every time – just drop in and out as you like.
If you'd like to join the group, email Stephen at [email protected] and he will get you signed up.

Recently Ed Giles our Action for Pain Coordinator and one of our AFP volunteers Alison travelled to Dundee to help with a Living Proof café for people with chronic pain.

Ed told his story of recovery from chronic pain over a cup of tea and biscuits. There were insightful conversations, wise inputs from Alison, Claire, and Renata (all pictured) all contained within a safe welcoming atmosphere.

Ed said "It is a real privilege to be working in partnership with such a great charity who are working hard to help people with their chronic pain."

Twice a month Health All Round hosts a meditation space – once online, and once at the Art and Spirituality Centre in Gorgie. Sometimes, meditation can be challenging, other times it can mind-blowing and beautiful, as it was for M-A Elder, who came along to our online meditation session recently. She wrote this beautiful poem about her experience.

If you’d like to join our meditation classes, just email Stephen at [email protected]

MEDITATION MAGIC

Just the other week at Art,
we drew magical standing stones.
We used bleeding tissue and carbon paper,
black card and metallic tones…
. to depict the symbols on the stones,
some pictish, some constellations.
One stone coloured, the other black.
We cut shapes without hesitation.

The backgrounds were to make the stones shine,
to show case their magical presence.
Some aspects touched my heart,
whilst others tested my patience.

Just an hour later,
in my ecotherapy group,
In the midst of a Zen meditation,
a strange turn my experience took.

I found myself in a field at night,
full of standing stones.
I looked up to a midnight sky,
'neath a borealis zone.

As I watched above my head,
a shooting star flew by.
I felt myself begin to expand,
I felt that I could fly.

I observed many constellations,
the moon and the stars up above.
Such wonder filled my heart,
surrounded by peace and love.

I watched as equations beyond my knowledge,
fell from expansive space.
Apart from E = MC squared,
with a quizzical look on my face.

Before I knew it, I had arrived;
back in my body again.
Such an experience I’ve never had
The Universe was my friend.

I opened my eyes very slowly,
felt my body again in the chair.
As I related my journey,
how I longed to be back there.

Grateful to be alive,
I took a deep breath and sighed.
How special was that, how magical too.
Thanks to these two special teachers who..
.knew exactly how to engage,
the part of me that turned a page,
of 'WOW!– Did that really happen to me? '
I felt greatful with such humility.

Autumn - Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, as John Keats so beautifully described this time of year.

So, with the weather being so calm it's a good time to get out and about. Luckily we are blessed to have Saughton Park right on our doorstep - it is truly a botanical gem.

As you may already know, spending time in the outdoors is good for your heart and good for your mind. So if you need to clear your head, get away from the noise, and hustle, bustle head for Saughton Park, the place of gorgeous flowers and plants, big skies, calm benches where you can chill alone or have a wee blether with whoever passes by.
You will be all the better for it.

Fun Fact - Saughton Park was conceived and designed by John Wilson McHattie, Edinburgh Corporation's Superintendent of Parks in 1900.
Mr McHattie also created the Floral Clock in Princes Street Gardens.

See if you can spot some of the plants we photographed the other day in the park and let us know your own thoughts or memories of our wonderful Saughton Park.

We recently received a generous book donation through the Children's Book Project from Gavin and Maxine Bryce from Story Yard Books who wrote the children's book "Voyage to Planet Dream," a lovely bedtime story written and published here in Edinburgh. They provided 400 copies of their book which we have been able to share with the wider community. Books were shared with Oxgangs and Wester Hailes Library to give out to families and use in their Book Bug sessions and also with Dalry Primary School who were able to give copies to all their pupils in P1-P3 classes. Copies have also been made available at the GP practices that we work with and have been given to local Health Visitors to distribute to the families that they are working with. It has been great to be able to share this lovely wee story with so many local children.
