🌿 A Little Lavender Love 💜
The beginning, middle and end of aromatherapy!
What an extraordinary little plant lavender is. Its beautiful purple flowers and unmistakable fragrance have been treasured for centuries, but there's so much more to its story than simply smelling lovely!
As an aromatherapist, lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has always held a special place in my heart.
💜 Did you know that lavender played a fascinating role in the birth of modern aromatherapy?
In 1910, French chemist and perfumer René-Maurice Gattefossé suffered serious burns following an explosion in his laboratory.
He later documented his experience of using lavender essential oil on his injuries, an experience that became an important part of aromatherapy history.
There's a famous version of the story where he plunges his burning hand into a vat of lavender oil. It's a wonderful story.
Gattefossé went on to research essential oils, publishing his influential book Aromathérapie in 1937.
🌿 And what makes lavender so fascinating?
Its essential oil contains naturally occurring aromatic compounds, including linalool and linalyl acetate, which have attracted scientific interest for their potential calming properties.
Lavender also has a rich history of use in bathing, perfumery, skincare and relaxation.
For me, this is where the magic of the natural world meets the curiosity of science. Plants have been part of human life for thousands of years, and we're still discovering more about their remarkable chemistry.
💙 So why lavender in Angel Gel™?
When I developed my original formulation, lavender was one of the botanicals I chose to bring together with aloe vera, witch hazel, arnica and tea tree.
My love of aromatherapy and the natural world has always been at the heart of Angel Gel, and the original formulation remains unchanged to this day.
And that is why lavender will always be one of my favourite plants. 💜
Now I'm curious — are you a lavender lover, or is there another essential oil that holds a special place in your heart?
