Moray Ultrasound Medical Ultrasound Scanning Clinic. Rapid Access clinic. Experienced sonographers.

A lot of the time, it’s not the big, obvious symptoms that bring people in.

It’s the things that have been there for a while…
- the knee that’s never quite right,
- the lump you keep meaning to get checked,
- or that ongoing discomfort you’ve got used to.

It’s easy to put it off, especially when it doesn’t feel urgent.

But getting a scan is often much quicker and simpler than people expect. In many cases, appointments are available the next day, and you’ll receive a detailed report shortly after your scan, so you’re not left waiting and wondering.

While ultrasound doesn’t replace a diagnosis from your GP or specialist, it gives clear, useful information to help you understand what’s going on and what to do next.

All scans are carried out by experienced specialist sonographers, so you’re in safe hands from the start.

Finding a lump or swelling can feel unsettling, even when it isn’t causing any pain.

For some people, it’s something they’ve noticed for a while. For others, it’s new and unexpected. Either way, the uncertainty is often the hardest part.

A soft tissue ultrasound is a simple, non-invasive way to take a closer look and understand what might be causing it.

Many lumps turn out to be harmless, such as cysts or lipomas, but a scan can give you that clarity rather than leaving you guessing.

Appointments are often available the next day, and you’ll receive a detailed report shortly after your scan, so you’re not left waiting for answers.

All scans are carried out by experienced specialist sonographers, so you’re in safe hands from the start.

Pelvic pain is often described as “normal”, especially around periods.

But there’s an important difference between something being common and something being healthy.

Pain that:
❎ stops you going to work
❎ wakes you at night
❎ requires regular strong pain relief
❎ causes pain during s*x
❎ or is worsening over time

isn’t something you should simply accept.

Conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts or fibroids can contribute to ongoing symptoms. In some cases, persistent bloating or pelvic discomfort can also require further investigation.

Ultrasound cannot diagnose endometriosis on its own and cannot diagnose ovarian cancer. However, it can assess the ovaries and surrounding pelvic organs, identify cysts or other structural abnormalities, and help guide appropriate next steps.

If pelvic pain is persistent, your GP should always be your first point of contact.

If you would prefer not to wait for imaging or would like additional reassurance, Moray Ultrasound offers private pelvic scans without the need for a GP referral. A detailed report is always sent to your GP to support ongoing care.

Ultrasound can tell us a lot, but it can’t see everything.

We often talk about what ultrasound can help investigate, but understanding its limitations is just as important.

Ultrasound creates images using high-frequency sound waves. For those sound waves to produce a useful image, they need to be able to travel through the area being examined and return to the probe and some things make that difficult.

Bone is one example. Ultrasound can be useful for looking at soft tissues around a bone or joint, but sound waves don't travel effectively through bone. This means ultrasound can't provide a detailed view of what is happening inside a bone.

Air and gas can also get in the way. Sound waves don't travel well through air, which can make structures hidden behind gas more difficult to assess. This is one reason ultrasound isn't suitable for examining every part of the body.

There are also conditions and symptoms where another type of imaging, such as an X-ray, CT or MRI, may provide the information that's needed.

So while ultrasound is an incredibly useful, non-invasive form of diagnostic imaging, the right scan depends on what needs to be investigated.

At Moray Ultrasound, we only offer scans where ultrasound is an appropriate form of imaging. If you're unsure whether one of our scans is suitable for your symptoms, please get in touch and we'll be happy to advise.

Foot or ankle pain can make everyday activities surprisingly difficult.

Whether it's discomfort when walking, pain after exercise, recurring swelling, or an injury that never seems to fully heal, understanding what's causing your symptoms is often the first step towards recovery.

An ankle and foot ultrasound scan focuses on the soft tissues of the foot and ankle, helping to assess structures such as tendons, ligaments and bursae. It can help identify common causes of pain and swelling, including Achilles tendon problems, plantar fasciitis, ligament injuries, Morton's neuroma and inflammation around the joint.

One of the advantages of ultrasound is that it can assess structures in real time while the foot or ankle is moving, providing valuable information about how the tissues are functioning.

Our experienced sonographers will explain what they can see during your scan and provide a detailed report. While ultrasound findings are not a diagnosis, they can provide reassurance, answer questions and help guide any further treatment or investigation that may be needed.

If foot or ankle pain is stopping you from doing the things you enjoy, it may be worth getting it checked.

When you hear the word ‘ultrasound’, is pregnancy the first thing that comes to mind?

For many people, it probably is. But ultrasound plays a much wider role in healthcare and can be used to investigate symptoms and concerns throughout the body.

One of its advantages is that it provides real-time imaging. That means a sonographer isn't simply looking at a single static picture, they can examine structures from different angles and, with some musculoskeletal scans, assess what happens as you move.

It can help investigate the possible cause of symptoms such as persistent abdominal or pelvic discomfort, swelling around a joint, a suspected tendon injury, urinary symptoms or a lump that needs further assessment.

Ultrasound also uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation, and many scans are relatively quick and straightforward to carry out.

October is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month, so we're shining a light on just how versatile diagnostic ultrasound can be, and some of the areas of the body you might not realise can be assessed with it.

Of course, ultrasound isn't the right investigation for every symptom. If you're unsure whether one of the scans we offer may be suitable for you, please get in touch and we'll be happy to advise.

Pain and discomfort can have many different causes, and sometimes an ultrasound scan can help provide a clearer picture of what’s going on.

Depending on your symptoms and where they are, ultrasound can be used to assess a range of areas, including the abdomen and pelvis, as well as joints, tendons, muscles and other soft tissues.

It can also be useful when investigating a new lump or swelling beneath the skin.

The right scan will depend on your individual symptoms, and ultrasound isn’t suitable for every type of pain or condition. If you’re unsure whether one of our scans may be appropriate for you, please get in touch. We’re happy to talk you through the services we offer and help you understand your options.

No GP referral is required to book our scans.
