💛 Learning Disability Week Day 2 | Tuesday 16th June 2026

👀 Do you see me?

🎤 On Tuesday, The Sunnybank Trust members and staff were interviewed by Ashley Centre , sharing what Sunnybank does, why it matters, and what makes them proud to be part of our community.

💛 As one of The Ashley Centre's Charity of the Year, we're grateful for opportunities like this to raise awareness and share the voices of people with learning disabilities.

💬 People with learning disabilities should always have the opportunity to be heard, share their experiences, and help shape the world around them.

🤝 Thank you to The Ashley Centre for helping us celebrate Learning Disability Week and shine a spotlight on our amazing community.

💛 Learning Disability Week Day 1 | Monday 15th June 2026

👀 This year’s Learning Disability Week theme is "Do You See Me?" - a reminder that everyone deserves to be seen, heard and valued.

🌟 One of the highlights of our first day was our Understand Us - Disability Consultants UK team meeting with a potential new client to discuss an exciting piece of work.

🤝 The project would involve training key teams across Surrey, helping services better understand and support people with learning disabilities.

💬 By sharing lived experience and expertise, Sunnybank and Understand Us are helping to create more inclusive services where people with learning disabilities are listened to, understood and included.

💛 A brilliant way to begin a week focused on visibility, inclusion and making sure people with learning disabilities have a voice.

💛 Learning Disability Week Day 3 | Wednesday 17th June 2026

🛍️ On Wednesday, we spent the day at The Ashley Centre celebrating Learning Disability Week and connecting with our local community. Ashley Centre

We hosted a fun street-style quiz, chatting with shoppers, bringing people together, and sharing more about Sunnybank and the work we do.

It was a brilliant opportunity to meet new people, create conversations, and celebrate the amazing community around us.

🐎 One of the questions in our quiz was: Which horse won this year’s Derby?

🤔 Do you know the answer?

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, joined in, and helped make the day so much fun! QUIZ VIDEO COMING SOON!

📍 Understand Us and The Sunnybank Trust were invited tothe Surrey County Council Transitions Fair in Reigate on the 16th of April

💼 Understand Us delivered a talk for employers on how to support people with learning disabilities (LD) into work

👥 This included practical tips on accessible recruitment, inclusive interviews, and training

📊 Employment rates for people with LD in Surrey remain low, at around 6% even though over 85% of people with a learning disability want paid work

🤝 Understand Us is working to help close this gap by supporting employers to improve access and opportunity

🗣️ Understand Us and Sunnybank Trust also had a stand where we spoke to employers, parents and students about the work we do

📩 If you are an employer looking to make your recruitment and employment processes more accessible, please get in touch (our email is in the comments below)

🗓️ Last week, the team hosted a meeting to update Daisy McInnerney from Surrey County Council on the Cervical Screening Project.

📈 We ran through what has been achieved so far and what is next in the project work plan.

💡 Ashleigh (Project Lead) supported by consultants Beth, and Vicky, shared the next steps as we prepare for a focus group later this month.

⚠️ Commissioned by Surrey Heartlands Health and Care Partnership, this project is tackling the low rate of cervical screening among women with learning disabilities.

💪 We are proud to be working on a project that will bring big change for people with learning disabilities across Surrey.

The theme for this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities is “Fostering disability‑inclusive societies for advancing social progress.”

We believe inclusion starts with communication that works for everyone 🗣️📘 The Sunnybank Trust

❌ People with learning disabilities face major barriers in:
• Healthcare 🏥
• Businesses 🏬
• Public services 🚍

Simple adjustments like:
• Easy Read 📘✨
• No Jargon ❌🗣️
• Visual guides 👀📊
can make a world of difference.

Did you know?
⚠️ 42% of deaths among people with LD are considered avoidable.
🚫 In Surrey, women with LD are 64% less likely to receive cervical screening.
📊 Nationally, only 13.45% of women with LD had a cervical cancer screening test.
📘 Many people with LD tell us they would prefer their NHS and GP information in Easy Read.

‼️ These numbers highlight the important need for change
📢 We are excited to be taking action

We are proud to be working on two key projects ⬇️

1️⃣ Accessible Annual Health Reviews:
📝 Working with the ICP to redesign the Annual Health Check questionnaire
👩‍⚕️ and support GPs to use inclusive communication

2️⃣ Improving Cervical Screening Access:
🤝 Partnering with Surrey Heartlands to understand low screening rates
👨‍🏫 and running a workshop to boost screening accessibility

✅ Today is a reminder that inclusion is not optional
✅ Accessible communication saves lives.

📣 Invisible Disability Week is happening now, and we want to shine a light on the invisible challenges many people live with every day.

💡 Someone might look “okay” from the outside, but could be living with:

• a learning disability
• chronic pain, fatigue or health conditions
• neurological or cognitive impairments

These things are real. They just aren’t always seen. And because of that, they’re often missed or misunderstood.

At Understand Us ( part of The Sunnybank Trust ), our team has lived experience of learning disabilities and other impairments.

🔍 This week, we are asking organisations and communities to think:

• Is our information easy to understand?
• Can people with hidden disabilities take part and feel welcome here?
• Are we listening to real voices and lived experience?

🌟 When you make things accessible, you help people take part, connect, and be seen.

✅ If you would like some help making your workplace, service or community more inclusive - we would love to work with you.

We offer training, audits, and practical advice that make a real difference.
