Heat exhaustion can make you feel unwell and experience dizziness, headaches, tiredness, excessive sweating and feeling or being sick.

It's not usually a medical emergency, as long as you can cool down within 30 minutes.

If someone has heat exhaustion:

✅ Move them to a cool place
✅ Remove all unnecessary clothing like a jacket or socks
✅ Give them plenty of water – isotonic sports drinks or oral rehydration sachets can also help replace salt lost through sweating
✅ Cool their skin – spray or sponge them with cool water and fan them
✅ Stay with them until they're better

We have the following guidance from the Barn Surgery Team for anyone attending an appointment in the hot weather.

Individuals (particularly the elderly) visiting GPs during hot weather should prioritise hydration, sun protection, and safe transit. Plan appointments for the cooler morning hours, carry extra bottled water, and avoid the peak heat between 11 AM and 3 PM. Stay hydrated even if not feeling thirsty.

Essential hot weather guidance includes:

Travel Safety: Reschedule any non-urgent, routine GP visits if extreme heat warnings are issued. Allow ample travel time to avoid rushing or physical overexertion, which accelerates dehydration.

Medication Awareness: Extreme heat can reduce the effectiveness of certain medications. Check storage instructions, as most medicines should be kept below 25°C.

Clothing: Wear light-colored, loose, breathable fabrics (e.g., cotton) and a wide-brimmed hat to help regulate body temperature.

Sun Protection: Apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen and seek shaded routes when walking to and from the clinic.

Recognize Symptoms: Be mindful of heat exhaustion (dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating) or heatstroke (confusion, rapid pulse).
