Have you ever considered day care for someone you love?
When we talk about care homes, we tend to think about someone moving into one permanently. But that isn't always the case, and for some families day care can offer a really useful middle ground.
Caring for an older person at home, particularly someone who is frail or living with dementia, can gradually become a big part of everyday family life. Often husbands, wives, sons and daughters don't necessarily think of themselves as carers – they're simply looking after someone they love.
But everyone needs a little support sometimes.
Spending a day at a local Strong Life Care home can give someone a change of scenery, some company and the opportunity to enjoy the things happening around the home. They might join in with an activity, have lunch with other residents, spend some time in the garden, enjoy some entertainment or simply sit and have a cup of tea and a chat.
For someone who doesn't get out as much as they once did, having somewhere familiar to visit regularly can become an important part of their week. They get to know the staff and residents, make friends and, most importantly, feel that they belong.
It can also make a real difference to the person caring for them at home. Having a few hours knowing that your loved one is safe and enjoying their day gives you time to catch up with everything else in life – whether that's work, appointments, shopping, seeing friends or just having some time to yourself.
There is another reason day care can be particularly valuable.
Choosing a care home for someone you love is a huge decision, and families are often trying to make that decision at a difficult point in their lives. Day care gives people the chance to get to know a home long before they ever need to consider residential care.
You can see how the home really runs. Your loved one can meet the team, get to know some of the residents and find out whether they actually enjoy spending time there. The team gets to know them too – their personality, their interests, what they enjoy and what matters to them.
If circumstances change later and respite or residential care becomes the right option, they are coming somewhere they already know, rather than walking through an unfamiliar door for the first time.
And they may decide that residential care isn't right for them at all. That's fine too.
