I’m on a mission to help skin and facial practitioners feel more confident in their consultations 💪🏼 so ive put together a free audio training to help you do this and I’d love to share it with you 🤓

The Consultation Reset: 7 shifts to take you from ‘where do I even start’ to clients who always follow through.

If you’re ready to leave your consultations with a clear plan and not a page of notes, comment RESET and I’ll send it over 💕

…its just 15 mins long so you can listen whilst prepping for your client AND put it into action right away 👌

Everyone will tell you it’s the treatment, the product or the protocol.

But no-one is ever willing to tell you it’s really how you lead the consultation 😳

The skin industry will tell you great results come from the next ingredient, the next machine, the next technique. So when a client isn’t improving, we assume we need another one….

But honestly I wish we’d all stop reaching for the next thing. Because your client doesn’t need another product, gadget or piece of advice. She’s already overwhelmed with a cupboard of skincare she no longer uses. What she’s missing is someone who can make sense of it, and that starts with how you lead the consultation, not after the topicals stop working.

if you’re finally ready to leave a consultation with a clear plan and not pages of notes and no idea where to start welcome - I have just the gift for you 🎁

I’ve made a free audio training, The Consultation Reset, with the seven shifts I use in every client consultation. And the best thing is it’s under 20 minutes, so you can listen whilst you prep for your next client and put it straight into action 👌

If you want to be the first to hear it, comment RESET and I’ll send you the link as soon as it’s ready to download later this week.

We all know stress can set skin off.

Most of us have watched a flare follow a hard few weeks 😳

What’s less clear is what to do with that in the treatment room. A client mentions her stress in passing, and it can be hard to know how to bring it into the consultation in a way that’s useful to her.

A 2006 review describes the skin as a prominent target of the body’s stress messengers, including cortisol, substance P and nerve growth factor. It also discusses how nerve signals can switch on mast cells in the skin and drive inflammation.

So your client’s skin may be treating stress as a biological message, not just a feeling. Which means it needs a central focus in your consultation process, just as much as skincare.

You don’t need to solve her stress - no magic wands needed 🪄

But it’s important to make the link for her. You may be the first person who can make this lands for her in a way that helps her move forward 💕

A question I often ask my clients is: when was the last time you did something for yourself?

Then get curious.

How do you approach stress in your consultations? Comment below.

⬇️ Follow along for part two, where we look at how the skin isn’t only on the receiving end of stress. It has a stress response of its own too.

Just landing from a week of bliss, food, weather everything just so so gorgeous in October in greece. Even when it rained. Feeling very rested and even managed to attack all 3 of my holiday reads, v guilt of books sometimes going completely untouched 📕 😳LOVED Animal, deffo best female character I’ve read in a while. enjoying Ripening but third read might have been a bit ambitious for a week lying on beach trying to give my brain and nervous system a rest! Will respond to emails and messages this week xx

As a Nutritional Therapist and Skin Specialist who spent years looking for a topical solution to what was a gut-brain-skin connection problem, you’re welcome 😘

We know that skin doesn’t exist in isolation. The gut, the nervous system, hormones and the immune system all play out in the skin. That’s not a niche idea anymore, it’s backed by a growing body of research.

And yet so much of the way we approach skin still begins and ends with the skin itself.

I’m not suggesting every skin concern has an internal cause. I’m suggesting something simpler. That we get curious about the whole picture before deciding what the skin needs, especially when a client isn’t responding the way we’d hope to topical treatment.

This is where I believe Skin Therapists have far more influence than they realise. You’re often the one asking the questions before anyone else even thinks to.

You don’t need to solve every part of the puzzle. You need to know what matters most for the person in front of you.

The skin isn’t an island.

This is what I mean by Modern Skin thinking. It’s the therapist who puts skin in the context of the whole person, and asks more before treating.

If this is already how you think, even if you’ve never had the language for it, follow along, this is the first in a series on seeing skin beyond the surface and I can’t wait to share more with you.

Don’t forget to share with your pals who already think like this, and to your stories to help your clients to too!

Number 5 is what makes working in skin so rewarding for me, what do you think?

If you’re ready for a new way to think - and support - skin flares, this is what we do inside The Modern Skin Practitioner.

Doors are open until Monday 7th

This is for you if you know the internal side of skin health is more important than anything a topical treatment can do, but you're like, "How do I explain this in a way my clients will actually do something about? Why aren't more of them following after my advice?" 😫

🤓 In the Modern Skin Practitioner, we spend six months getting confident in the internal side of skin health so you can connect what you're seeing on the skin to what your hearing about her diet and lifestyle, and guide her on where to start. That's what gets the most out of the topical work you're already brilliant at. 🤩

Most Skin Therapists who meet a dead end with clients either:

🧪 Aren't confident in the skin science to lead the conversation.
📌 Can't connect what they're seeing on the skin to their diet and lifestyle.
📋 Sharing way too much advice at once, which adds to overwhelm instead of one clear step they can take between treatments.

With MSP that all changes 🥳

✅ Consistent results sit on the other side of a clear way of thinking you can use with every client and that grows with you.

Doors to MSP are open until Monday, 7th of September.

I promise you that as a nutritional therapist who’s spent over a decade putting together programmes for my skin clients, I don’t always follow this advice.

My instinct is still to scatter. Well, if you don’t like that, try this. And if that doesn’t work, there’s this too. Anyone still have to learn this lesson the hard way sometimes??

But here’s what it looks like when you learn to trust your judgement, and guide your clients in the conversations they need.

“I now take real time to understand where a client is at, then start with one or two changes that will make the most difference first and build from there. I’ve learnt to trust my knowledge and my instincts. Clients get clearer, more manageable guidance, and better results because of it.”

Catherine, SBS student - which you’ll find inside module 2 of The Modern Skin Practitioner

If you’re a Skin Therapist ready to support your client skin health beyond the surface, doors to The Modern Skin Practitioner are open now and close on the 7th of September.

Comment “MSP” and let’s talk through if MSP is the right next step for you.

Skin nerd time 🤓

On a deep dive for a client connecting the dots between their fatigue and rosacea I stumbled across this fascinating paper

Skin Barrier Function: The Interplay of Physical, Chemical, and Immunologic Properties. Baker et al., 2023

Mitochondria are our little power houses producing energy (ATP) in cells. They play a huge role in our physical health and can of course play a role in our skin health too. This graphic and paper specifically describes the role they play in balancing our acid mantle and ceramide production and supporting skin barrier health.

The health of our Mitochondria can be supported by certain diet and lifestyle behaviours. things like viruses and inflammation can impede mitochondrial function and result in symptoms such as fatigue, illness, low mood….

When a client is presenting with fatigue and rosacea I am immediately alert to what might be affecting their mitochondria function 🕵️‍♀️

- diet?
- lack of exercise?
- lack of sleep?
- infection?
- heavy metals?
- medication?
- alcohol / drugs?

This clients programme is already working to support their mitochondria and we are seeing improvements in her energy and skin so hopefully it’s just diet and lifestyle related. If not I’d consider specific testing to assess for other factors affect her mitochondrial health and contributing to her fatigue and rosacea.

Do you ever think about your mitochondria? I hope this time has inspired you to do so 🤩

Give me a 💓 if you want me to share some tips on how you can support yours

Xx
