This month, we’ve been shining the spotlight on pharmacy services, and today we’re taking a closer look at the Primary Care Pharmacy Team and the important role they play in supporting patients and GP practices across Angus.

Your GP practice has a dedicated pharmacy team working behind the scenes AND directly with patients to help ensure medicines are prescribed, managed and used safely.

The team includes:

They work alongside GPs, nurses and other healthcare professionals to provide a wide range of services, including:

✅ Reviewing medications to ensure they’re safe and effective.
✅ Supporting patients with medication queries and concerns.
✅ Managing medication changes following hospital discharge.
✅ Helping patients with long-term conditions.
✅ Supporting repeat prescribing and medication monitoring.
✅ Helping patients get the most from their medicines.

We’re continuing our Spotlight on Pharmacy this month, introducing the people who help keep our patients safe, supported and informed when it comes to their medication.

Yesterday, we introduced Nicola, our Senior Pharmacy Technician. Today, it’s time to meet another important member of our pharmacy team…

💊 HOW DID MEGAN GET INTO PHARMACY?

Megan’s pharmacy journey began in 2020 when she started working as a Saturday girl at Lloyds Pharmacy.

Fast forward a few years, and Megan qualified as a pharmacist just last year! 🎓👏

Since then, she’s been putting her knowledge and skills to good use, helping patients get the most from their medication.

💚 WHAT DOES MEGAN ENJOY MOST ABOUT HER JOB?

Megan loves the problem-solving side of pharmacy!

She enjoys being challenged, working through complex medication issues and, most importantly, the satisfaction of knowing she’s helped a patient.

And just like Nicola, Megan enjoys being part of the Lour Road Group Practice team! 🥰

🤔💊 SO, WHAT DOES A PRACTICE PHARMACIST ACTUALLY DO?

Yesterday, we shared just how much our pharmacy technicians do behind the scenes.

Well, Megan is involved in many of those same activities!

From answering medication queries and carrying out medication reviews to helping with prescription synchronisation, medication shortages, alternative formulations and supporting patients who struggle to manage their medicines.

Our pharmacy team also acts as an important link between hospitals, community pharmacies and general practice, working closely with GPs, nurses, carers, care homes and other healthcare professionals.

But as a Practice Pharmacist, Megan also brings additional clinical expertise to the team.

🔎 LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK!

💊 Drug interactions – Checking whether different medicines can safely be taken together and identifying potential interactions.

🧩 Complex medication queries – Using her clinical knowledge to investigate more complicated medication issues and help find safe, appropriate solutions.

🏡 Care home medication reviews – Reviewing residents’ medication to ensure treatments remain appropriate, effective and safe.

📋 Medication reviews – Looking at patients’ medicines to identify potential problems, unnecessary treatments or opportunities to improve their care.

💡 Medication advice – Supporting patients and healthcare professionals with questions about treatments, side effects and medication safety.

💚 MORE THAN JUST PRESCRIPTIONS!

There’s a lot more to being a pharmacist than dispensing medication!

Practice Pharmacists play an important role in patient safety, helping ensure medicines are prescribed appropriately and that patients receive the best possible treatment.

Much of this work happens quietly behind the scenes, but it makes a real difference to patient care every single day.

Nicola began her pharmacy career 18 years ago as a Pharmacy Assistant at Stracathro Hospital.

She qualified as a Pharmacy Technician in 2012 and has since gained a wealth of experience working in various roles across hospitals and primary care throughout Dundee and Angus.

💚 WHAT DOES NICOLA ENJOY MOST ABOUT HER JOB?

Nicola particularly enjoys supporting patients to get the best from their medication while helping to ensure prescribing is safe, effective and cost-efficient.

She also loves feeling part of the Lour Road Group Practice team! 🥰

You might think pharmacy technicians simply deal with prescriptions, but there’s SO much more to their role!

Our pharmacy team works behind the scenes every day, helping patients, clinicians and other healthcare professionals.

Here’s just a snapshot of what they do! 👇

🔹 Answering medication queries – From patients, GPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, District Nurses, hospital teams, carers, care home staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

🔹 Bridging the gap – Helping communication and continuity of care between hospitals, GP practices and community pharmacies.

🔹 Yearly prescriptions – Arranging annual prescriptions for suitable patients taking stable, long-term medication.

🔹 Synchronising prescriptions – Helping patients align their medication quantities so they can order their regular medicines together rather than at different times.

🔹 Medication compliance assessments – Supporting patients who may struggle to manage their medication, including providing medication charts and arranging Venalinks where appropriate.

🔹 Medication reviews and switches – Helping ensure patients are receiving suitable, effective and cost-efficient treatments.

🔹 Medication counselling – Helping patients understand their medicines and how to take them correctly.

🔹 Medication shortages – Working to find suitable alternatives when medicines are unavailable, including dealing with supply issues affecting holiday medication requests.

🔹 Prescribing projects – Working on initiatives to improve prescribing safety, quality and efficiency.

🔹 Alternative medication formulations – Reviewing options such as liquid medicines for patients who experience swallowing difficulties.

💡 THERE’S MORE TO PHARMACY THAN MEETS THE EYE!

A huge amount of work goes on behind the scenes to make sure patients receive the right medication, in the right form, at the right time.

Our pharmacy technicians play a vital role in keeping everything running smoothly, supporting our clinicians and helping patients manage their medicines safely.

Our reception team are trained to recognise when your symptoms or request may be something that your local community pharmacy can deal with, often without the need for a GP appointment.

Pharmacy First Scotland allows community pharmacies to provide advice & treatment for a range of common conditions - meaning you can often get help quickly, locally & without needing to see a GP.

☕💚 A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR AMAZING STAFF! 💚☕

Our staff recently held their own little Macmillan Coffee Morning and lunch, with everyone getting involved by baking, bringing along treats and making generous donations. 🍰🧁☕

We’re absolutely delighted to say that, between us, we raised a fantastic £170 for Macmillan Cancer Support! 💚

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed — whether you baked something delicious, donated, tucked into the treats or simply helped make the morning such a lovely one.

There was certainly no shortage of cake! 😂🍰

It’s brilliant to see our staff coming together to support such an important cause.
