You go back to the thing that always suited you. And it doesn't fit the way it used to.
Tonight is my stepdaughter Brooklynn's wedding dance.
I'm wearing the red satin dress from my Global Woman Awards ceremony.
It's plain. Being red is more than enough to stand out.
2 or 3 years ago, I had an undercut.
Then I cut it short. Then I had a mullet for a while, and it was really cool.
Then I decided to grow it out.
Back to my classic bob. The look I know suits me. Familiar. Safe.
Now I have it, and it doesn't work the way it used to.
Last week, on my mat, I saw why.
I'd been dressing safer too. For when I appeared online, for being more attractive to other people.
"As I am stepping up into my next level, my identity needs to increase with it."
I'm 47. I'm transitioning, and I feel that very clearly.
I'd outgrown the old familiar identity.
It took going back into it to realise this isn't me anymore.
So the mullet's coming back.
Safe is one of the quietest patterns there is.
Nobody notices it. That's the point of it.
Send this to the friend who keeps going back to the safe version of herself.
