🦴 OSTEOPOROSIS: Are you looking after your bones?

Did you know that osteoporosis can cause bones to become weaker and more fragile, increasing the risk of fractures?

The good news is that there are steps you can take to support your bone health! πŸ’ͺ

🦴 5 ways to help keep your bones strong:

πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Keep moving – weight-bearing activities such as walking can help support bone health.

πŸ‹οΈ Build strength – resistance exercises help maintain muscle strength and support your bones.

πŸ₯› Get enough calcium – important for maintaining healthy bones.

β˜€οΈ Don't forget vitamin D – it helps your body absorb calcium.

βš–οΈ Work on your balance – balance and strength exercises can help reduce your risk of falls.

πŸ’™ How can we help?

At Osteopathy and Therapy in Low Fell, we can help you explore suitable exercises to improve strength, balance, mobility and confidence, taking your individual needs and fracture risk into account.

If you have osteoporosis, exercise should be tailored to you. Some movements, particularly repeated or heavily loaded bending and twisting of the spine, may need modification.

🦴 Your bones support you every day. Give them some support in return!

🦴 FUN BONE FACT! Did you know…? 🦴

Your skeleton is AMAZING!

🦴 Adults typically have 206 bones in their bodies.

Your bones are living tissue that constantly renews and repairs itself.

πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, dancing and strength training, helps keep your bones strong.

πŸ₯› Calcium, vitamin D and a balanced diet also play an important role in maintaining healthy bones.

And here's the important bit… your bones, joints and muscles all work together to keep you moving! ❀️

Whether you're struggling with back pain, stiff joints or reduced mobility, our team at Osteopathy and Therapy in Low Fell can help you work towards moving more comfortably and confidently.

πŸ‘ **Are your glutes weaker than you think?**

Your glutes do much more than help you squat or run! Strong glute muscles help support your **hips, pelvis, lower back and knees** and play an important role in balance, walking, running and everyday movement.

**Signs your glutes may need some attention:**

πŸ‘‰ Your knees tend to fall inwards when you squat or go downstairs
πŸ‘‰ You struggle to balance on one leg
πŸ‘‰ You feel your lower back working more than your buttocks during exercise
πŸ‘‰ Your hips feel weak or unstable
πŸ‘‰ You find stairs, hills or running more difficult than they used to be
πŸ‘‰ You struggle to perform a single-leg bridge or squat with good control

πŸ’‘ **Why are strong glutes important?**

Your glutes help control how your pelvis and legs move. Improving their strength and control can help you move more efficiently and support your return to exercise following injury.

**Try this:** Stand on one leg in front of a mirror. Can you keep your pelvis level and your knee aligned over your foot? If not, your hip strength and control may benefit from some attention.

πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈ Exercises such as bridges, squats, step-ups and hip abduction can all help β€” but the right exercise depends on your individual needs.

If you're struggling with pain, weakness or returning to exercise, our physiotherapy team can assess your movement and create a programme specifically for you.

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ Common Running Injuries: Don’t Let Pain Stop You! πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

Running is great for your body and mind, but doing too much, too soon, changes in training load, or movement imbalances can sometimes lead to pain.

Two of the common running-related problems we see are:

🦡 Runner’s Knee – pain around or behind the kneecap, often aggravated by running, stairs or squatting.

🦢 Achilles Tendon Pain – pain or stiffness around the Achilles and back of the heel, often worse with running or after rest.

The good news? You don’t always have to stop running completely. An assessment can help identify what may be contributing to your symptoms and guide you towards an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan.

Our physiotherapy & osteopathy approach may include:
βœ”οΈ Identifying contributing factors
βœ”οΈ Hands-on treatment where appropriate
βœ”οΈ Strength and mobility exercises
βœ”οΈ Running-specific rehabilitation
βœ”οΈ A gradual return-to-running plan

πŸ“… If running pain is holding you back, book an assessment with us and let’s work out a plan to get you moving confidently again.
