Yesterday was a horrible reminder that life isn’t always sunshine and roses.
I absolutely blew a gasket. My day was ruined before it had even really started.
I was waiting in bed for a new catheter to be fitted. I’d sacrificed my breakfast because I was told an appointment was booked for 9am. Then 9am became 10am… 11am… 12pm… and eventually 1pm, and I was still lying in bed without any scran for 18 hours.
With every minute that passed, my blood boiled a little bit more.
And eventually, it just spilled over.
From that point onwards, every little thing seemed to add to the stress, until I ended up screaming.
I know that isn’t acceptable, especially when my kids are there to witness it. But the truth is, right now, screaming is sometimes the only release I have. I can’t go for a walk to clear my head. I can’t go for a tab. I can’t punch a wall. I can’t just disappear for an hour and reset.
So sometimes it comes out in ways I wish it didn’t.
And honestly, the emotional roller coaster of this journey is incredible.
I would say 95% of the time, I do really well. I’ve learned to deal with disappointment, bad news, setbacks and heartache in ways I never thought I could.
But there will always be that 5% that catches me out.
And I think yesterday was part of that 5%.
The important thing is that one bad day doesn’t erase all the good days. One meltdown doesn’t define me. One moment where I struggle doesn’t mean I’m failing.
I’m human.
I’m dealing with circumstances I never asked for, learning a completely different way of living, and trying to be the best husband, dad and person I can be while doing it.
So today, I pick myself up.
I take a breath.
I apologise where I need to.
And I carry on.
Because that’s what this journey has taught me more than anything:
You don’t have to be strong every minute of every day. Sometimes strength is simply getting through the s**t day and having another go tomorrow. ❤️
And tomorrow, I’ll have another go.
