Bone strength is shaped throughout life by genetics, nutrition, physical activity, hormones, medical conditions and medicines.
Osteoporosis is often silent until a fracture occurs, but there are practical steps we can take at every age:
BUILD
Include regular weight-bearing and resistance exercise.
PROTECT
Eat a balanced diet, avoid smoking, moderate alcohol intake and reduce falls risk.
STRENGTHEN
Understand your personal risk factors and seek appropriate assessment when indicated.
A proper bone-health review involves more than ordering a vitamin D test.
Depending on your age and individual risk factors, it may include:
• A FRAX score to estimate your 10-year probability of a hip or other major osteoporotic fracture
• Consideration of whether a DEXA scan is clinically appropriate
• A dietary calcium calculation to assess whether your usual diet is providing enough—before automatically turning to supplements
• Review of previous fractures, family history, menopause, steroid exposure, medical conditions, smoking, alcohol intake and falls risk
Not everyone needs a DEXA scan or calcium supplements. The right approach depends on the whole clinical picture.
A fracture caused by a minor fall or injury after age 50 is an important reason to arrange a bone-health assessment.
At CAS Medical, a GP-led review can calculate your FRAX score, assess whether a DEXA scan is appropriate and review your dietary calcium intake.
