You can receive advice and treatment from independent prescribers at community pharmacies across Swansea Bay.

As seasonal illnesses like colds start to spread, we've created Pharmacy Fortnight to highlight the services available through community pharmacies and help you get the right care in the right place at the right time.

Take a look at today's featured service.

It allows independent prescribers to give advice, make referrals and prescribe medication for a variety of ailments.

It can help to relieve pressures on GP practices, with the qualified pharmacists assessing appropriate patients without the need for an appointment.

Please contact your local pharmacy to ask if it is available.

Community pharmacists must complete an accredited course to qualify as an independent prescriber.

Appointments to see an independent prescriber aren’t essential but depending on availability, you may be asked to call back at a more appropriate time. Other community pharmacies may require an appointment.

The independent prescriber will carry out a consultation in a private room where they will discuss your symptoms.

They will then decide whether it’s best to offer self-care advice, make a referral to a GP or another healthcare professional or provide treatment.

If you are suffering with a sore throat, you can be assessed and even treated, if needed, at your local pharmacy.

This service is available in ALL community pharmacies across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot.

Anyone over five years of age can use it.

Need health advice or treatment for a minor illness? Your local pharmacy can help.

As seasonal illnesses like colds start to spread, we've created Pharmacy Fortnight to highlight the services available through community pharmacies and help you get the right care in the right place at the right time.

Take a look at today's featured service.

To be able to access it, you must register for the Common Ailments Service at your pharmacy, which only takes a few minutes.

The pharmacist will carry out an assessment in a private consultation room and decide whether it is appropriate to swab your throat. If so, the result will determine if the sore throat is due to a bacterial infection.

If the test is carried out, you will only need to wait a few moments to receive the result.

Following the result, the pharmacist may provide treatment if it is necessary or they may offer self-care advice instead.

Community pharmacies may ask you to call back or advise you to book an appointment, so please check availability at your local pharmacy.
