It’s taken me a long time to realise this.
But the most memorable moments in my life…
The ones I can remember in vivid detail…
The things I’m proud of…
The things I’ll take through the rest of my life…
The memories I’m happiest to talk about…
Have zero correlation to how my body looked. I don’t look back and think about my most proud achievement, whilst being able to tell you exactly what my weight was. Or how lean I was. My body and brain have overcome and achieved some really cool things (sometimes looking back at them shocks me even now) because I forget just how much I’ve done.
It makes me sad to think back to times in my life, where I genuinely thought how my body looked, was the most important and valuable part of me. How I chased aesthetics alone, thinking it would make me more likeable. Or I was so fixated on numbers, that it took away from a special moment.
Of course, I’m not saying caring about your appearance isn’t a valid thing. Or wanting to feel a certain way in your body. Having a self standard. Knowing when you feel, perform, show up as your best and most comfortable self. I help my clients and people I’ve worked with, work towards their own goals and often these include an element of aesthetics or body change.
But we try to make sure that within that goal, there are more meaningful targets that are less affected by fluctuation. That don’t tie their entire worth to a set body shape, size and number. We work on body image and feeling of self pride and accomplishment outside of aesthetics and what a body looks like. We work on body acceptance, but also being able to take focus away from what you look like. So your actions support you and are that of someone who respects their body regardless.
I enjoyed chatting to people for this mini series. Because the answers made me smile orrrr even better, the person I was talking to smiled remembering things they’ve done. Or thinking up ways of describing themselves.
