Why Drive Past? Discovering the Forest of Bowland with Access the Dales
Heading to the Lake District or Yorkshire Dales? Don’t drive past the Forest of Bowland without stopping!

There are beautiful views, peaceful woodland, working farms… and alpacas who may or may not be impressed to see you! 🦙

Our six Access the Dales hubs offer specialist wheelchairs and mobility scooters to borrow, helping people with limited mobility explore this lovely countryside with family and friends.

Despite our Yorkshire name, we’re very happy to cross the border. With scenery like this, who can blame us?

Please book ahead and check opening dates, equipment and route suitability.

A day in the countryside. It sounds simple, doesn’t it?

But when you can’t get over the stile, through the gate or along the path, that day out can feel a very long way away.

This year, Access the Dales has helped around 1,500 people experience the countryside through our free-to-borrow all-terrain mobility equipment, supported outings and inclusive events. đź’š

Behind that number are families exploring together, children discovering new adventures and people realising they don’t have to be the one left behind.

Our Festival for Children welcomed families, with opportunities to try everything from bushcraft to adaptive cycling. One parent told us their child would usually want to leave an event after half an hour. This time, they wanted to stay. That says so much.

We’ve shared days out with community groups, welcomed people taking their first countryside adventure and watched confidence grow. There’s been laughter, friendship and probably enough cake to warrant its own impact report! 🍰

Thank you to our volunteers, hub hosts, partners, donors and everyone who has joined us. You make these moments possible.

We love working alongside the team at the Forest of Bowland National Landscape. It's worth having a look at our 'wheelchair hub page on our website for further information on how to book an all-terrain wheelchair in this beautiful area.

Who says adventures have to stay above ground?

A day out with the Feel Good Factor group from Leeds took Access the Dales to Ingleton Cave — a chance to explore somewhere different, spend time together and enjoy a shared adventure.

For us, this is what making the inaccessible accessible is all about: opening up opportunities, building confidence and helping more people feel they belong in the great outdoors. Even when the adventure takes us underground!

Thank you to everyone who joined us.

Where would you love your next adventure to take you?

“One of the ladies said she could taste the fresh air.”
That’s a moment I’ll remember from our Access the Dales walk at Ilam Park, held as part of the YHA Festival of Walking with Sheffield Environmental Movement and Roshni Sheffield.
For many of the women, it was their first time exploring the countryside. As we followed the paths through the park, we talked about the barriers that can make a day out feel daunting: access, confidence, culture, and whether you’ll feel you belong when you arrive.
By the end, there were smiles, plenty of chatter and, best of all, plans to do more walks. That’s why it matters to include accessible walks in a festival celebrating the outdoors. Everyone deserves the chance to join in.
Thank you to the National Trust for the refreshments, and to Andrew MocCoy and the YHA for their support. And thank you to everyone who joined us and made the day so special. 🧡
