The first question isn’t “What treatment do you want?”

It’s “What are you trying to get back to?”

That answer changes the plan.

For one person, the priority might be lifting without guarding. For someone else, it could be sleeping comfortably, getting through work or returning to running.

Assessment helps us understand what is getting in the way. Treatment can help settle symptoms or improve movement. Rehabilitation then builds the confidence and capacity to do the thing that matters.

The method should follow the goal, not the other way around.

Someone might book a sports massage because something feels tight, sore or just isn't moving quite right.

But a good appointment starts with understanding what's actually going on.

Sometimes sports massage is exactly what's needed. Other times, taking a closer look at movement, training habits or what someone is struggling to do can help shape a better approach.

At Austin Performance, it's not about giving everyone the same treatment because they've booked the same appointment.

It's about understanding the person, choosing what makes sense and helping them get back to doing the things that matter to them.

Drivers: has checking your blind spot quietly become a whole-body movement?

You might notice that one side turns easily, while the other makes your shoulders or chest join in — or simply feels uncomfortable by the end of a longer drive.

That does not diagnose a problem, and it does not automatically mean anything is damaged.

But it is useful information.

While safely parked, try turning to look over each shoulder and notice:

• whether one side feels different
• whether your trunk helps you finish the movement
• whether it feels stiff, sore, guarded or simply unfamiliar
• whether it changes after driving, desk work or training

Do not force the range, and do not test it while driving.

If checking your blind spot is uncomfortable or getting harder, an assessment can look at the movement you have, the way the rest of your body contributes and the demands you need to manage day to day.

Brentwood — Austin Performance is coming to Fit Factory Performance.

We’re preparing a new gym-based Austin Performance clinic on Ongar Road, bringing assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return-to-performance support into a setting built around movement and training.

This will be for more than just Fit Factory members. If you live or work around Brentwood, Shenfield, Ingatestone or the surrounding area, you’ll be welcome too.

The aim is simple: clinically credible, personal care with a practical route back to the things that matter to you — whether that means training, running, work, family life or simply moving with more confidence.

We’re getting the room, systems and full client journey ready properly. Opening and booking details will follow once everything is confirmed.

For now, follow Austin Performance for room updates, useful injury and return-to-training advice, and the confirmed launch details when they’re ready.

Returning to running is not a race to put time, pace and frequency back at once.

There is no universal order that suits every runner, every injury or every goal.

Time changes how long you are exposed to running in each session.
Frequency changes how often you repeat that exposure and recover from it.
Pace changes how demanding each step — and the whole session — can become.

A useful starting principle is to keep two variables fairly steady while you change one. That gives you a clearer picture of what you are responding to.

For many runners, rebuilding a repeatable amount of easy running before chasing their usual pace is sensible. But the right order still depends on what you can tolerate now, what you were doing before, what your goal requires and how you respond during and after each run.

Look beyond one session. How do you feel later that day? The next morning? Can you repeat the plan without the response continuing to build?

The aim is not one impressive run. It is a week you can repeat — then gradually build.

Save this for the point when “I feel ready to run” turns into “what should I increase next?”

Sometimes the most responsible thing I can tell someone is: this needs medical attention before sports therapy.

Austin Performance can be a sensible first step for many non-urgent muscle and joint problems, training issues and persistent aches. But there are situations where I would rather you go somewhere else first.

Call 999 or go to A&E for a life-threatening emergency.

With back pain, current NHS guidance says to get immediate help if you also have:

• pain, tingling, weakness or numbness in both legs
• loss of feeling around your ge****ls or a**s
• changes in your bladder, bowels or sexual sensation/function
• chest pain
• symptoms after a serious accident

Use NHS 111 or ask for an urgent GP appointment if severe pain starts suddenly, gets worse quickly, or you feel hot, cold, shivery or generally unwell.

This is not about making every ache sound frightening. Serious causes of back pain are rare. It is about recognising when sports therapy should not be the first stop.

If you are unsure and think you need medical help now, NHS 111 can direct you to the appropriate service.

Good care includes knowing when not to treat.

The first five minutes of an assessment aren’t just small talk.

Before I test movement, strength or anything else, I’m listening for context.

When did it begin, and was anything different around that time?
What are you no longer able to do comfortably?
What does the problem interrupt — work, sleep, training or family life?
What are you worried it might mean?
And what would feeling better actually let you get back to?

Two people can point to the same area and need very different help, because the problem can affect their lives in very different ways.

That first conversation helps me understand the person before I start testing the body.

You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis or the perfect explanation. Start with what has changed and what you want back. We can work through the rest together.

Teachers: does your back feel different by home time than it did at morning registration?

A school day is rarely one posture.

It can be a mixture of standing to teach, sitting to plan or mark, leaning over desks, moving between rooms, carrying books or a laptop — and staying focused on everyone else while your own body takes a back seat.

None of those things automatically means teaching is damaging your back.

But the total demand can build across the day, especially when there is not much opportunity to change position or recover between tasks.

Instead of trying to hold one “perfect” posture, a few more realistic options are:

• change position before discomfort forces you to
• bring books or marking higher when you can
• split heavier loads across two trips
• use the walk between lessons as a brief movement break
• notice when discomfort begins and which parts of the day change it

That pattern is useful information. It can help make sense of why your back feels manageable at registration but very different once you get home.

Save this for a busy teaching week — or send it to a teacher whose back always knows when it is Friday.

One good training session is encouraging — but it isn’t the whole test.

When you’re returning after pain or injury, it’s easy to judge progress by one question: “Did I get through it?”

That matters. But so does what happens next.

I’d also want to know:

• Were symptoms manageable during the session?
• Did you feel controlled and confident?
• How did you feel later that day?
• What was the response the next morning?
• Could you repeat a similar session without the reaction steadily building?

One comfortable session doesn’t automatically mean you’re ready to jump straight back to normal training. Equally, one session that feels uncomfortable doesn’t automatically mean you’ve failed or caused damage.

The pattern matters more than a single snapshot.

Good progression usually means finding a level you can tolerate, recover from and repeat — then building from there.

Save this for the next time you’re working your way back into training.

I don’t start by asking, “What’s the best exercise for this?”

I start with the person.

What are you trying to get back to?
What can you tolerate at the moment?
Which movement or physical quality needs rebuilding?
Can the exercise be progressed clearly as you improve?

Two people with shoulder pain may not need the same starting exercise. Their goals, current capacity and response to movement can all be different.

That is why an exercise should have a reason behind it — not simply appear on a generic list.

The exercise matters. The fit, dose and progression matter too.

A good rehabilitation plan should make sense to the person doing it.
