In preparation for our workshop in January ‘Gaining Strength through Yoga’, Lisa and I discuss whether we need to work out as well as practise yoga? Or whether practising yoga is enough?

It’s possible to get attached to muscular effort, whether that’s through practising yoga, or working out in the gym. And it’s also possible to get attached to the appearance of strong muscles.

Whether it’s in the yoga studio or in the gym. we need to find equilibrium and balance.

We do need to maintain strength in order to enjoy life, and especially as we age. Strength is very important for the maintenance of independence in later life.

Here are some Balancing Tips!

It’s important to be able to shift weight sideways when necessary (it’s necessary in Tree pose)

ContralateraI movement underlies ease in walking and running - as well as balancing.

Focusing on three points in the sole of the foot is helpful - base of little toe, base of big toe, and heel. Plus the toes can help with some grip when necessary.

I practise these movements every day!

I have to admit that these anemones are looking quite pretty. (Usually I’m exasperated by the multitude of invaders into the gravel in the back garden!)

Try these simple exercises to improve sleep and digestion, alleviate stress, headaches and anxiety.

Practised with care, the exercises will bring the two topmost vertebrae of the spine - C1 and C2 - into alignment. Thus potentially improving blood flow to the brain stem and some other areas of the brain. In this way the vagus nerve is regulated.

The reason the eye movements are important, is because there’s a direct neurological connection between the 8 sub-occipital muscles and the muscles that move our eyeballs.

NB If I’d had a camera assistant I would’ve shown a close up of my eye movement in the second exercise!
