Low fat. High protein. No added sugar. What actually matters? 🛒

Walking down the supermarket aisle can feel like a nutrition lesson you never signed up for.

Every packet seems to promise something different, but one claim on the front doesn't tell you the whole story.

When choosing foods, it can help to look beyond the marketing and consider:

🌿 The overall nutritional profile, including fibre where relevant
🌿 The ingredients and nutrients that matter to you
🌿 How the food fits into your usual eating habits
🌿 Whether it's something you enjoy and find satisfying

A product labelled “high protein” isn't automatically the best choice for you. And a food that doesn't shout about its health benefits can still be a perfectly nutritious option.

You don't need to find the “perfect” product every time you shop. It's about understanding what you're choosing and how it fits into the bigger picture.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by nutrition advice and want support that's tailored to you, email me.

Too tired to cook? You still deserve a proper meal. 🤍

After a long day, the last thing you might want to do is spend an hour in the kitchen. And if you've had a poor night's sleep or a particularly busy day, even deciding what to eat can feel like a lot.

The good news? Eating well doesn't mean cooking everything from scratch.

Here are a few easy options for days when you need to keep things simple:

🍳 Eggs on toast with tomatoes
🥔 A jacket potato with beans and cheese
🍚 Ready-cooked chicken, microwave rice and frozen vegetables
🥣 Soup with wholegrain bread and a protein-rich side

Frozen vegetables, tinned beans, microwave rice and other convenient options can all help you put together a nourishing meal with less effort.

Convenience isn't the opposite of healthy eating. Sometimes, it's what makes it possible.

As autumn begins, you might feel tempted to overhaul your eating habits, set new weight-loss goals or promise yourself you’ll do things differently this time.

But you don’t need to change everything at once.

Instead, think about what would make the biggest difference to how you feel day to day.

🌿 Could you make breakfast more satisfying?

🌿 Could you find a more regular eating routine?

🌿 Could you build more movement or strength into your week?

🌿 Could you make sleep a little more of a priority?

Or perhaps it’s time to understand what your recent health results are telling you.

Choose one or two things that feel realistic and meaningful to you. Small, sustainable changes can be far more useful than trying to follow a completely new set of rules.

You don't need another diet. You need an approach that works for you and your life. 🤍

If you're ready to make sense of your nutrition and health during menopause, email me to discuss personalised support.

Craving something to eat when you’re not even that hungry? 🤔

There isn’t always one simple reason we want to eat.

Sometimes it’s physical hunger. Other times, it might be habit, boredom, stress, comfort or simply wanting to enjoy something delicious.

And that’s perfectly normal.

Food isn’t just fuel. It can bring pleasure, comfort and connection, too.

Rather than judging yourself or automatically trying to distract yourself from the craving, take a moment to notice what you’re feeling.

Are you hungry? Tired? Stressed? Looking for a little comfort?

You don’t need to label your cravings as good or bad. Understanding them can help you work out what you need, without guilt. 🌿

When work gets busy, lunch can easily become an afterthought. You might eat while answering emails, rush through your meal or keep putting it off until you finally get a moment to yourself.

By then, you may be feeling very hungry, tired or struggling to concentrate.

Where possible, try to give yourself a little space to eat. Step away from your screen, slow down and allow yourself time to enjoy your meal.

Of course, not every working day goes to plan. The aim isn't to create another rule to follow, but to find realistic ways to make eating part of your day rather than something you squeeze in around everything else. 🌿

What does a balanced plate actually look like? 🌿

It doesn’t need to be complicated, and there isn’t one perfect combination that works for everyone.

A balanced meal will often include:

🥚 Protein to support fullness and muscle
🥦 Vegetables or fruit for fibre and a range of nutrients
🥔 Carbohydrates for energy, ideally including higher-fibre options
🥑 Healthy fats to add flavour, satisfaction and nutrients

And one more thing that often gets forgotten:

Enough food for you.

A plate can contain all the “right” foods and still not be enough to keep you satisfied.

Your portions and choices will depend on your appetite, activity, preferences, health and what fits your everyday life.

Balanced eating isn't about getting every meal perfect. It's about creating a pattern of eating that nourishes you and works in real life. 🤍

A change on the scales from one day to the next doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve gained body fat.

Your weight can fluctuate because of things like:

✨ Fluid retention
✨ Hormonal changes
✨ Saltier foods
✨ Food still being digested
✨ Changes in bowel movements

This can be especially noticeable around perimenopause and menopause, when hormonal changes can affect fluid balance too.

So if the scales are higher after a meal out, a different weekend or simply a few days of eating differently, try not to immediately assume you’ve undone your progress.

One number doesn’t tell the whole story.

Look at your patterns over time rather than letting one weigh-in dictate how you feel about your progress. 🤍

Maybe the weekend involved more food than usual. Maybe you had a meal out, enjoyed a few drinks or simply ate differently to your normal routine.

That doesn’t mean you need to compensate on Monday.

The cycle of overeating → guilt → restriction → “starting again” can make food feel far more complicated than it needs to be.

One meal doesn’t undo your progress. And you don’t need to earn your way back to your usual routine by skipping meals or eating as little as possible.

Instead, simply return to your normal meals and routines.

No punishment. No compensation. Just carry on. 🤍

When I look at someone’s food intake as a dietitian, I’m not simply asking, “How many calories did you eat?”

I’m looking at the bigger picture.

Are you eating regularly?
Where are protein and fibre showing up?
Are your meals keeping you satisfied?
When does hunger tend to appear?
How does your eating fit around work, family and everyday life?

I’m also looking for patterns that might be affecting your energy, hunger or symptoms.

Sometimes, the most useful information isn’t found by judging individual foods. It’s found by looking at what happens across the whole day.

That’s where personalised nutrition support can make a real difference.

If you’re hungry in the afternoon, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed at eating well.

Sometimes the answer is simply earlier in the day.

Maybe breakfast was small.
Maybe lunch was rushed.
Maybe there’s been a long gap between meals.
Or maybe you’ve been running on coffee and willpower.

Your body doesn’t know that you’re trying not to snack. If it needs more nourishment, hunger is a perfectly understandable response.

Rather than asking, “How can I stop myself from snacking?”, try asking:

“Are my meals giving me enough?”

A satisfying snack can absolutely be part of a healthy, balanced diet. 🌿
