This week we’re diving into tonal chiropractic techniques and why subtle yet powerful can go beautifully hand in hand šŸ™Œ

Unlike manual techniques, which focus on purposefully moving joints, tonal approaches have a different intention. They encourage the gradual unwinding of long-held tension patterns within the nervous system, using a very light touch that helps the body release and reorganise itself from within.

Tonal techniques work primarily via the dura, a protective layer wrapping all the way around our brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves (a bit like cling film!) which then anchors in via attachments at the very top (occiput) and very bottom (sacrum) of our spine.

The dura also influences the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) — a clear fluid that cushions and nourishes the nervous system. CSF moves in a natural rhythm, and when tension softens, that rhythm can reset and balance. Often, this shift is accompanied by a change in breathing, as the body lets go.

This style of care can be especially supportive for people who spend a lot of time in ā€œfight or flightā€ mode. By encouraging a sense of safety and regulation, tonal work helps the nervous system move toward calm, rest, and connection. During this shift some people may experience a sense of releasing old stress or emotions held in the body.

Well-known tonal approaches include Network SpinalĀ®ļø (NSĀ®ļø), Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT), and BioGeometric Integration Ā®ļø (BGIĀ®ļø) — with BGIĀ®ļø being a particular passion for our principal chiropractor, Amy Pease. Cranial techniques are also tonal in nature, working with the same principles — balancing the dura and supporting healthy CSF flow.

Tonal techniques are suitable for everyone, but especially loved by those who prefer a gentler, subtler style of care. And while they may look light from the outside, they often work on a very deep and profound level.

This week we’re continuing our series exploring different chiropractic techniques — and today the focus is on Low-Force Manual approaches… a style of care we absolutely love here at Thrive šŸ’›

Low-force manual techniques are hands-on adjustments designed to support joint movement and nervous system function using gentle, precise input. Rather than relying on strength or force, they work through speed, timing, and accuracy to encourage the body to reset and rebalance.

The best-known example of this style is McTimoney Chiropractic — a whole-body approach that aims to realign and harmonise the musculoskeletal system with quick, light adjustments. McTimoney care focuses on restoring mobility, improving posture, and easing tension in a way that feels subtle and comfortable, while still being highly effective.

These adjustments are typically much quieter in nature, often involving little or no cavitation at all, which many people find reassuring and relaxing. Because of this low-force approach, McTimoney is particularly well suited to sensitive nervous systems, hypermobile bodies, children, and older adults šŸ‘¶šŸ‘µ It’s also a wonderful option for anyone who simply prefers a gentler, softer style of adjustment.

Here at Thrive, McTimoney is a special area of training and expertise for our associate chiropractor, Vicky Smith, who uses this approach to support patients who benefit from light, precise care.

Chiropractic care is always an ongoing collaboration between chiropractor and patient, and low-force manual techniques are thoughtfully tailored to each person’s needs, preferences, and how their body responds in the moment.

This week’s post is the first in our series focused on explaining and demystifying chiropractic techniques, and is all about Manual/Structural techniques… we hope you enjoy!

Manual or structural chiropractic techniques have a physical and mechanical goal to restore mobility and alignment in the spinal joints and extremities, using precise, hands-on adjustments šŸ™Œ

You may hear these described as ā€œHVLAā€ techniques — meaning high velocity, low amplitude. In simple terms, the movement is very fast, but small and controlled, using speed and accuracy rather than force, and always adapted to the individual body and nervous system.

The most widely recognised example of this style is Diversified chiropractic. Diversified uses specific hands on contacts to restore range of motion at the involved segment — easing tension, and supporting healthy communication between the brain and body. Because of its foundational role in chiropractic education, Diversified is taught at all chiropractic colleges, meaning most chiropractors receive some training in this approach.

As Diversified works directly with joint motion, these adjustments may sometimes involve a small ā€˜pop’, known as a cavitation šŸ¾ this is simply the release of gas from the joint — much like opening a fizzy drink — and is completely normal and harmless. It isn’t the goal of the adjustment, just something that can happen as movement is restored 😌

Like all techniques, manual and structural approaches are only used with full consent from the patient receiving the adjustment, and will be adapted for different ages, body types, sensitivities, and comfort levels šŸ’› Here at Thrive all of our chiropractors are trained in manual and structural techniques. Diversified is a particular area of clinical interest and specialty for our associate chiropractor, Max Watkins.

Happy New Year from all of us here at Thrive! We hope your 2026 has started with flow and ease ā˜ŗļø

In this month’s blog we’re focusing on a Deeper Connection, and taking some time to explain and demystify chiropractic techniques. (You can read the full article here: https://www.thrivecornwall.co.uk/a-deeper-connection-understanding-chiropractic-techniques/)

In so many ways, the way a chiropractor chooses to adjust, is as unique as their finger print šŸ™Œ
This is because Chiropractic has developed over more than a century, with now over 200 techniques manifesting to suit different bodies, ages, sensitivities, and nervous systems.

While techniques may look very different on the surface, they often share the same roots, and research now suggests that they work through shared neurological mechanisms - influencing how the brain processes sensory information from the body.

Interestingly research so far hasn’t shown that one technique leads to better neurological outcomes than another. What does seem to matter most is specificity - delivering the right input, to the right place, at the right time šŸ‘Œ

Stay tuned over the coming weeks, as we’ll be sharing more about the individual techniques we use here at Thrive!
