👶 PROBIOTICS FOR MUM OR BABY — DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE? 🦠

This is exactly the sort of research I love sharing with parents!

We know that a baby’s developing gut microbiome plays an important role in digestive health. But if we want to support those beneficial bacteria, is it better for a breastfeeding mother to take probiotics, or to give them directly to her baby?

🔬 A fascinating 2023 study investigated exactly this.

Researchers compared 47 breastfeeding mother–baby pairs.

One group of mothers took probiotics during late pregnancy and after birth. In the other group, the babies received probiotics directly.

The results were striking!

💙 100% of directly supplemented babies had the selected Bifidobacterium infantis strain detected in their gut by day 14.

🩷 Only 25% of babies whose mothers took probiotics had the same strain detected.

Even more interestingly, the babies receiving probiotics directly showed a significantly more favourable pattern of crying and fussing.

Does this mean probiotics cure colic? No. This was a small study involving healthy breastfed babies, not a clinical trial treating colic.

But it does raise fascinating questions about how we can support the developing infant microbiome.

👨‍⚕️ My advice to parents is based on research like this and 30 years of clinical experience.

I believe understanding why a baby is unsettled is far more useful than simply trying to suppress the symptoms.

That’s why I’ve developed my Baby Birth Triad™ approach, looking at the different factors that may contribute to colic, reflux and unsettled behaviour.

💬 I’d love to know: Were you advised to take probiotics yourself, or to give them directly to your baby?

Trying to lose weight… but calorie counting still isn’t working?

➡️ You cut back.
➡️ You eat less.
➡️ You try to be “good”.
➡️ You track what you eat.
➡️ But then the cravings hit.
➡️ You feel hungry.
➡️ You get hangry!
➡️ Snacky.
➡️ Low in energy.
➡️ Thinking about food all day.
➡️ Fighting your natural hunger

And by the evening, you feel like you’ve “failed” again.

But what if the problem isn’t your willpower?

What if your meals simply aren’t giving your body the right fuel balance?

Calories matter — but the balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats matters too.

When your food ratios don’t suit your body, restriction can backfire. You may feel under-fuelled, unsatisfied and more likely to crave, snack or overeat later.

That’s where Metabolic Body Mapping™ comes in.

We look at your body type, oxidiser speed and food patterns to help you find a more personalised way to approach weight loss.

The aim isn’t another strict diet.

It’s to help you feel:

✅ more satisfied
✅ fewer cravings
✅ less snacking
✅ steadier energy
✅ more in control around food

Where do you tend to gain weight?

All over?
Around the belly?
On the hips?
Saddle bags?
B***s and bum?

Most people are told weight gain is just about eating less and moving more.

But what if where you gain weight actually gives clues about how your body works?

At The Perrymount Clinic, we use Metabolic Body Mapping™ to look at patterns in the body and how they may relate to your unique food needs.

Because not every body responds to food in the same way.

Different body maps may have different tendencies, different challenges, and different food plans that suit them better.

That means the goal isn’t to follow the latest generic diet…

It’s to understand your body better.

✨ More clarity
✨ A more personalised food plan
✨ A way of eating that works with your body, not against it

One size doesn’t fit all.

Do you get hangry when you skip meals? (Hungry and angry!)

You try to be “good”.

You delay breakfast.
You push lunch back.
You tell yourself you should be able to last longer without food.

But then it hits.

Low energy.
Poor focus.
Irritability.
Sugar cravings.
Feeling shaky.
Overeating later.

And then you blame yourself for having no willpower.

But what if your body simply needs fuel sooner?

Some bodies burn through energy faster than others. For those people, long gaps between meals can lead to cravings, energy crashes and feeling hangry.

That doesn’t mean fasting is “bad”.

It means the better question is:

Does this actually suit my body?

That’s where Metabolic Body Mapping™ comes in.

We look at your body type, oxidiser speed, symptoms, cravings, energy and lifestyle to help you understand the food rhythm that may suit you better.

The aim isn’t restriction.

It’s helping you find a way of eating that keeps you feeling steadier, more energised and more in control.

More energy.
Less cravings.
Less hangry.

Intermittent fasting works well for some people…

…but not for everyone.

If skipping meals leaves you feeling tired, irritable, shaky, distracted, craving sugar, or overeating later, it may not be a discipline problem.

It may simply be that your metabolism prefers a different rhythm.

This is one of the key ideas behind Metabolic Body Mapping™.

Instead of forcing yourself into a food trend that doesn’t suit you, we help you understand:

• your body type
• your oxidiser speed
• the meal timing that may suit you better
• the foods that help keep you steady, energised and satisfied

Because the better question isn’t:

“Can I force fasting?”

It’s:

“Does fasting actually suit my body?”

When your food approach fits you, things often feel easier:

✨ More energy
✨ Less cravings
✨ Less hangry
✨ Better control around food

C-section scars can be healed on the outside but still feel tight, numb, sensitive or restricted underneath.
Scar tissue can affect how the lower tummy, fascia and abdominal tissues move — and for some mums, this can create a feeling of pulling, discomfort or disconnection from the core.
Our new C-Section Scar Reset is a gentle starter package for postnatal mums.
Suitable for many mums from around 6–8 weeks post-birth once medically cleared, and also helpful for older C-section scars.
