Improving accessibility in a historic or listed building can require a particularly sensitive approach.

Changes in level still need to be addressed, but available space, existing architecture and the impact of any structural alterations can all influence what is possible.

In these environments, access solutions need to be considered carefully alongside the character and use of the building. A platform lift can sometimes provide step-free access with less intervention than other options, particularly where space for a ramp is limited.

Every building is different, which is why understanding the environment and its constraints is an important part of finding the right solution.

There are situations where step-free access is needed, but a permanently installed platform lift isn't practical.

The Stepless LP11 is a mobile platform lift that can be moved and positioned wherever access is required, providing greater flexibility in spaces where the access need may change.

Originally developed for rail and transport environments, it can also be used for stages, podiums and temporary access points, helping wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility overcome changes in level safely.

Its mobility makes the LP11 particularly useful for venues and environments where a fixed access solution could restrict how the space is used.

When it comes to building access, ramps are a familiar way to create step-free access, but they can often require considerably more space than people expect.

As the height difference increases, so does the length of ramp needed to achieve a suitable gradient. In an existing building, there may not be enough room, or the layout and structure of the building may make a ramp impractical.

This is where other access solutions, including platform lifts, can provide an alternative way to overcome changes in level without requiring the same footprint.

The right approach will always depend on the building, the available space and how people need to move through it.

When we're asked to help with an access project, the first step is to understand the building, the level change and how the space needs to work for the people using it.

A site survey allows us to look at the available space, how people move through the building and any practical or structural considerations that could influence the solution.

From there, our team can recommend and specify the most appropriate option, manage the installation and provide ongoing servicing and support once it's in use.

This is all part of our 360° approach where we support an access project from the initial assessment and specification through to installation and ongoing maintenance.

There’s no single solution to creating step-free access. A small change in level at the entrance to a listed building presents a very different challenge to accessing a raised floor in a school, office or public building.

Available space, how the building is used, the environment and the people who need to use it all influence the right approach.

Sometimes a ramp will work, but in other spaces, a platform lift may be a more practical solution.

At Multicare, we can assess your space and help identify the most appropriate access solution for your project.

Small changes in level can be a big challenge to wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. But, the Stepless LP5 and LP5+ provide a compact way to overcome small height differences, helping people to move independently between levels.

Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, they can be used in a wide range of environments, from schools and healthcare settings to shops, public buildings and private homes.

One of their key advantages is the flexibility of installation. The lift can be installed directly onto the finished floor or recessed, with no lift pit or major structural alterations required.

With a lifting capacity of up to 360kg, the LP5 and LP5+ can also accommodate powered wheelchairs and attendant use.
