Language shapes how we experience birth, sometimes more than we realise. It's actually one of the core principles behind hypnobirthing.
Words like "labour," "contraction," and "failure to progress" carry tension, blame, or fear baked right into them, even when that's not the intention behind using them. Swapping them for calmer, more accurate language doesn't change what's happening physically, but it can change how safe, capable, and in control you feel while it's happening.
The story we tell ourselves is built from the words we use to tell it. Change the language, and you start to change the story, and how you experience living it. This is exactly what hypnobirthing teaches, using calm, intentional language to reduce fear and tension in the body during birth.
This isn't about policing vocabulary. It's about noticing the words we've inherited, and choosing ones that actually serve us. This will be unique to each individual.
