It's Occupational Health Awareness Week!

Question - What is Occupational Health? It's a question we're asked surprisingly often - and yes, we do sometimes get mistaken for Occupational Therapy!

We had such a good day at Highland Spotlight 2026 yesterday!

We come back every year, and it is always nice to get out of the clinic, see familiar faces and have a good chat about health, work and what is happening across the Highlands.

Some of the team were kept busy on the stand carrying out wellbeing checks, including blood pressure and cholesterol checks. In total, we carried out 71 wellbeing health checks, which is the highest number we have ever done at a Spotlight event.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to see us or took part in a wellbeing check. It was another fun year, and thank you to Inverness Chamber of Commerce for another fantastic event! 💙

Our team were out supporting Albyn Housing Society Limited (Housing Association) employees across two sites yesterday 💙

Two of our nurses attended Albyn Housing’s Invergordon site, while one of our technicians supported employees at their Inverness location, delivering wellbeing checks across both sites.

Wellbeing checks are a practical way to make health support more accessible for employees, giving people time to pause, ask questions and better understand key aspects of their health within the workplace.

We support a wide range of businesses across the Highlands, Islands and Moray, delivering occupational health services in a way that works practically for their people, premises and working day.

A great example of our team out and about, supporting workplace health!

A very sweet delivery to the Alert Health clinic! 🍰☕
A big thank you to the team at Planit Scotland for surprising us with these lovely cakes, card and mug.
It's always a pleasure working with the team – although we think they may have discovered the quickest way to win over the Alert Health clinic! 💙
Thank you, Planit Scotland – the cakes certainly won't last long! 😋

As well as delivering services at our Inverness clinic, our clinicians have been busy supporting employers at their premises across Scotland.

As far as Orkney, the Outer and Inner Hebrides, Ayrshire, Lothian, Aberdeenshire (and everywhere inbetween!) this year our team has so far delivered occupational health services at client premises in 31 locations across Scotland.

Site service delivery has included health surveillance , fitness for task medicals e.g. safety critical medicals, substance misuse testing, advanced workstation assessments and health promotion across a wide range of working environments.

We know the geography, and enjoy problem solving the logistics and travel across this beautiful country of ours! A wide range of occupational health services can be practically, flexible and conveniently delivered on your doorstep.

Our Medical Director, Dr Louise MacLarty, has written this excellent piece for RSABI on sepsis and the particular risks within the agricultural community.

Away from Alert Health, Louise works with RSABI as part of its Health Hut team, supporting health promotion within Scotland’s farming and agricultural communities.

It’s also a good example of why occupational health needs to understand the occupation.

For those working in farming and agriculture, everyday exposures can influence health risk – from cuts and broken skin to contact with soil, slurry and manure. Add the pressures of a busy working day, lone or remote working and potentially delayed access to healthcare, and something seemingly minor can become much more significant.

Good occupational health isn’t solely assessing whether someone is fit for work. It’s about understanding how work can affect health, identifying risks early, and giving people practical advice that makes sense in the context of the job they actually do.

A really important message for everyone: if something doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore it.

We're delighted to share that Dr Amy Hilditch has passed her Diploma in Occupational Medicine (DOccMed).

Amy's GP background provides an excellent foundation for occupational medicine. Since joining Alert Health as a Medical Officer, she's successfully completed the DOccMed alongside her role with us, her work as an Emergency Practitioner at a local hospital, and locum GP sessions - no mean feat!

At Alert Health, we invest in dedicated training and continuous professional development. Having the right qualifications, specialist expertise and up-to-date clinical knowledge helps ensure we continue to provide the high-quality, evidence-based occupational health advice our clients expect.

Many congratulations to Amy on this fantastic achievement 👏💙
