There was a time when Janet never imagined her daughter Emily would live independently. 🏡

Today, Emily runs her own home, manages her money and makes her own decisions, and Janet has watched her confidence grow with every step. Just as importantly, Janet has the reassurance that, whatever the future holds, Emily has a settled home and people who know her. đź’š

Five tenants, five homes, and between them more than four decades of living independently with Fairoak. 🏡

For Vikki, home is the freedom to make her own way into town, and the confidence and friendships she has built since 2009. For Andy, it's the peace of mind of a settled, secure place to call home. Daniel talks about the practical support that has helped him build a life of his own over sixteen years, Lexi about the simple importance of feeling safe, and Rebecca about having her own space and doing things her own way.

Every story is different, yet each shows what the right home and support make possible, and why supported housing is worth protecting.

Having worked closely with Fairoak for many years, Michael understands the difference that good supported housing can make, both to a person’s home life and to their future. 💚

His perspective highlights the importance of getting the balance right: giving people the opportunity to grow in confidence and do more for themselves, with support there when it’s needed. 🏡

That’s an important part of the National Housing Federation’s Supported Housing Week campaign, recognising the value of the people and services that help make independent living possible.

🏡 Everyone deserves a safe, comfortable home and the opportunity to live as independently as possible.

For National Supported Housing Week, I visited Fairoak Housing Association in Workington to meet some of their tenants and the brilliant staff who support them.

Fairoak provides specialist housing for people with learning disabilities and autism, helping them live independently, build confidence and enjoy fulfilling lives as part of their local communities.

Supported housing is about so much more than putting a roof over someone’s head. It’s about giving people choice, dignity, independence and the support they need to thrive.

It was lovely to meet everyone and see the difference this kind of housing can make.

A huge thank you to the team at Fairoak for the warm welcome and for the important work they do across West Cumbria. 👏

For Sam, having his own flat means having the freedom to get out and enjoy the things that matter to him, with the reassurance of knowing support is close by. 🚲💚

His experience is a reminder that the right home can open up opportunities well beyond your front door, and why access to good supported housing matters.

Six years ago, Zoe watched her daughter take a step into the unknown, moving out of the family home and into her own Fairoak home in the middle of the pandemic. 🏡

Today, Zoe writes about the confidence, skills, friendships and purpose her daughter has found since, and how, as her mum, she no longer worries about her living on her own. Her story is a powerful reminder this Supported Housing Week of what the right home and support can make possible, for the person living there and for the family who love them. đź’š

The right changes to a home can make a real difference to someone’s independence and everyday life. 💚

Philip’s story is a reminder that supported housing is about more than providing a place to live. It’s about making sure people have a home that works for them.

Philip’s experience speaks to an important part of the National Housing Federation’s Supported Housing Week campaign: the need for homes that meet people’s individual needs, so they can live as independently as possible. 🏡

Richard and Sharon’s story offers a parent’s perspective on what it means to know their son has a home and support he can rely on, not just today, but for the years ahead. 💚

Matt has been part of the Fairoak community since 2009. We’re grateful to his parents for sharing their experience and helping show why the right supported home matters to the whole family.

This Supported Housing Week, we’re joining the National Housing Federation in calling for more suitable homes and support, so that more people and their families can have that same reassurance about the future. 🏡
