Do you spend long hours sitting at a desk? 💻
When neck pain or tension starts to creep in, it’s easy to blame our posture or the way we sit at our desk.
But neck pain is rarely caused by just one thing.
It can involve different structures, including muscles, ligaments, joints, discs and bones, and can also be influenced by how we move, work, rest and manage stress.
Spending long periods in the same position, particularly when working at a computer, can contribute to muscular tension and stiffness. But other factors may also play a part, including:
👉 Age-related changes such as osteoarthritis or spondylosis
👉 Muscle and ligament strain following an injury, such as whiplash, a fall or an accident
👉 Stress and anxiety, which can increase muscle tension and contribute to headaches originating from the neck
👉 In some cases, irritation of a disc or nerve, which may cause pain, pins and needles or numbness into the shoulder, arm or hand
So rather than focusing on finding one “perfect” posture, remember that our bodies are designed to move.
👉Changing position regularly, getting up from your desk and adding small movement breaks throughout your day can all help to avoid spending too long in one position.
💙 Osteopaths are trained to assess neck pain from a whole-body perspective, looking beyond just the painful area and considering how you move and use your body day to day.
Treatment may include hands-on soft tissue techniques, gentle stretching and articulation, and mobilisation techniques where appropriate.
