A letter to the “middle-aged” women in my life:

I hope these years feel like coming home.

Not to the person you were before exactly, but to the parts of her you put down along the way.

The things you loved
before everyone else had an opinion.

The clothes that make you feel like yourself.

The books, the dancing, the hobbies

The loud laugh you learned to soften
because someone once looked at you
as if joy should be quieter.

I hope you pick it all back up.

Maybe not giving a f**k
is not carelessness,
but clarity.

Knowing what is yours to carry.

Knowing what never was.

Letting people misunderstand you
without rushing to explain.

I hope you remember
that your life belongs to you, too.

That wanting something
does not make you selfish.

That rest does not need to be earned.

That pleasure does not need a purpose.

That you are allowed to choose
what lights you up simply because it does.

I hope you take up space.

I hope you change your mind.

I hope you laugh too loudly

and leave when you are ready
and wear the thing
and book the trip
and stop shrinking your days
around what other people expect.

Let these years a return to joy,
but this time without apology.
