🎃 What a spooktacular start to the academic year at Team South Lakes! 🎃

We are incredibly proud of our students and staff this half-term. Our community partnership work with The Coro Hall in Ulverston has been a massive success, bringing our college community together to create some fantastic Halloween decorations. 🕷️✨

We also went on our very first college trip to see The Gruffalo! It was an amazing production featuring highly skilled actors multi-roleplaying, alongside fabulous sets and props. Our students and staff absolutely loved both experiences! 🎭

To wrap up a brilliant first half term, we finished the week with a lively Halloween party before breaking for the half-term holiday. 🥳🍬

It has been a wonderful start to the academic year. Very proud of Team South Lakes! 💙

🌟 Celebrating Workplace Success at Beaumont College Lancaster

We're delighted to share some fantastic news from our students' community work placements this week!

Alexandra has started her placement at the St John's Hospice Café, where she has been learning new hospitality skills, including how to safely and effectively operate the dishwasher. It's wonderful to see her developing confidence and gaining valuable experience in a busy workplace environment.

Rebecca continues to thrive at the St John's Hospice Charity Shop in St Nicholas Arcades. Through her hard work and dedication, she has progressed to independently operating the till and serving customers, demonstrating excellent customer service skills and growing independence.

These achievements highlight the incredible progress our students make through meaningful work experience opportunities. We are incredibly proud of Alexandra and Rebecca for embracing new challenges, building their skills, and making valuable contributions to their placements.

A huge thank you to the teams at St John's Hospice Café and St John's Hospice Charity Shop for providing such supportive and inclusive opportunities for our students.

Student Voice in Action: Celebrating Democracy at Beaumont College South Lakes 🗳☑️

At Beaumont College South Lakes, we believe every learner should have the opportunity to have their voice heard and make a meaningful contribution to college life.

This half term, learners took part in our Student Union elections, experiencing democracy in action through campaigning, voting and representing the views of their peers. Candidates shared their ideas and aspirations for improving the learner experience, before learners cast their votes to elect their Student Union representatives.

The election process provided a fantastic opportunity to explore and put into practice key British Values, particularly democracy, mutual respect and individual liberty. Learners were empowered to make informed choices, express their opinions and actively participate in decisions that affect their college community.

We are proud to introduce our newly elected Student Council and role holders:
Jessica - President
Bradley and Lei-Faith - Vice Presidents
Jack - Secretary
Maxwell - Treasurer
Keira - Events Planner
Arran - Eco Champion

A special thank you goes to Elicia, Graduate Management Apprentice - Education, for joining the celebrations and recognising the enthusiasm, commitment and leadership shown by our learners. Elicia visited Beaumont College South Lakes to observe how learner voice is embedded into everyday practice and to gain insight into the ways our learners are empowered to influence decisions and shape their college experience. Her involvement highlighted the importance Salutem places on listening to and valuing the voices of the people we support.

This initiative reflects the core Salutem values. Our learners demonstrated how being Supportive of one another, Ambitious in their goals, Unique in their ideas, Engaging in the democratic process and creating Meaningful opportunities for change can have a positive impact across the college community. The elections also reinforced the importance of being Transparent throughout the voting process and Loyal to representing the views and interests of fellow learners.

The Student Union plays a vital role in ensuring learner voice remains at the heart of what we do. We are excited to see the new council develop ideas, lead projects and continue making a difference throughout the year.

Congratulations to everyone who stood for election, every learner who voted and our newly elected representatives. We look forward to seeing the positive impact you will make.

Last week, Beaumont College welcomed Stagecoach for a valuable travel training experience for our students.

Students had the opportunity to practise getting on and off a bus without the pressure of a regular timetabled service. It was no easy task. The bus gangway is narrow, and positioning safely in the wheelchair space required some excellent driving skills and careful manoeuvring!

The visit also gave other students the chance to develop their communication skills using AAC devices and discuss important aspects of bus travel safety, including where to sit, when it is safe to stand, and who to ask for help when needed.

Experiences like these help build confidence, independence, and essential life skills.
A huge thank you to Stagecoach and bus driver Rob for their time and support in providing such a valuable learning opportunity.
