It's Hospice Care Week- a time to highlight how both vital and chronically underfunded hospices are.
The wonderful Dove Cottage Day Hospice where I work for example only gets 4% of it's funding from the government. Shocking isn't it.
Free at the point of use, open to all who need it- and as much as we don't like to think about it, most of us will need some form of care towards the end of our lives.
Hospice Care is about supporting patients, carers and families with a variety of palliative conditions not just cancer- Parkinson's, MND, heart failure, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis...to name a few. Carer stress, pre emptive grief, financial stress, social support, emotional well-being.... So many different aspects.
Highlighting the amazing work of hospices will hopefully ensure that funding will eventually increase to ensure people continue to benefit from this vital service.
It could be your mum, your grandad, your auntie, your best friend, you- everyone deserves a supported, dignified end of life.
