Fancy seeing your design on the front of our card this winter? ❄️

The Winter Greetings Card Competition is open, and we’d love to see what you come up with.

One design will be chosen, printed, and sent out as the official Herts at Home winter greetings card this year.

✏️ Open to every colleague, and to your families and friends. Children’s entries very welcome.
🖼 Any style, any materials. Paint it, draw it, collage it, or make it on a computer.
🗳 Five designs will be shortlisted, then everyone gets to pick the winner in a vote right here on our page.

Entries close Monday 9 November. Send your design to Michelle Wright, with your name and, if you’re entering for a family member, their first name and age.

Dig out the glitter, get the kids involved, and let’s see what Hertfordshire comes up with. ⛄

The clocks have gone back and the nights are drawing in. ☕

For a lot of the people we support, the colder months are quieter ones. Fewer trips out, fewer knocks at the door, longer evenings.

So a visit becomes more than the visit. Yes, there’s the practical side: getting up and dressed in a cold house, medication, a hot meal, getting safely to an appointment. But often the part that matters most is the armchair, the brew and the conversation. Someone who turns up, and keeps turning up. 💙🧡

Warmth comes in more than one form.

If you’re thinking about support for yourself or someone you love this winter, give us a call. No pressure, just a conversation.

“They’ve given us not only a physical break but a mental break too.” ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

From the daughter of someone we support.

When care arrives, it is not only the person receiving it whose life changes. It is the family who have been holding everything together. 💙

Nervous about taking the first step? Most families are. Start with a conversation.

We have been rated Excellent. 💙🧡

PAMMS is Hertfordshire’s independent assessment of care quality. Our report has just been published, and Herts at Home has achieved an overall rating of Excellent.

Across the services listed on the national PAMMS portal, only around 1 in 20 reach Excellent. It is the top rating, and it is not handed out often.

What matters most is what sat behind it. The assessment looked beyond our systems and processes at the actual experience of the people we support. It found care planning built around people’s histories, health needs and preferences. It found people being encouraged to stay independent, and care plans that connect people to the family, friends and communities that matter to them.

The feedback from the people we support says it best. Our care workers were described as polite, kind, patient, respectful and friendly. In Extra Care, people and their families told the assessors that staff take the time to understand each person’s preferences, routines and choices, and that they are treated with dignity and compassion. 💬

“We are incredibly proud to have achieved an Excellent PAMMS rating. What makes this particularly meaningful is that the assessment looked not simply at our systems and processes, but at the experiences of the people we support and the practice of our teams.

Our staff come to work every day wanting to make a genuine difference to people’s lives. They promote independence, preserve dignity, listen to what matters to each person and build relationships founded on kindness and respect.

This achievement belongs to everyone across Herts at Home. We also know that excellent care is about continually listening, learning and improving. We will use the findings from this assessment to build on what we do well and make our services even stronger.”
Jane Budge, Registered Operations Manager

“This is an awesome result and one that people need to know about, because of the fantastic job being done by all the team. It is great to know all the hard work is resulting in a first class service. It is a real privilege to be part of such a great organisation.”
David Baxter, Non-Executive Director

So thank you. To every care worker, supervisor, coordinator, manager and everyone in our support functions. A rating like this is not won in a week. It is built visit by visit, day after day. 👏

The nights are drawing in. ☕

As the weather turns, the days get quieter for a lot of the people we support. Fewer trips out. Fewer knocks at the door.

Our teams help with the practical things, getting up in a cold house, medication, a hot meal. But just as often the important bit is the armchair, the cuppa and the conversation. 💙🧡

Warmth comes in more than one form.

“Care means everything to me.” 💙🧡

Gemma is one of our wonderful carers, and she loves nothing more than having a laugh with our tenants and hearing the stories from their past. For her, it’s about being part of a team where everyone looks out for each other.

Thank you, Gemma, for everything you bring to Herts at Home. 🏡

This Saturday is World Mental Health Day. 💬

When we wrote our Wellbeing Policy, we did not guess what our teams needed. We asked them.

Mental Health First Aiders came out on top. So that is what we did.

Nine colleagues are now trained to Level 3, offering support in the moment, right across the organisation. 🤝 Bereavement, family stress, anxiety, pressure at work. Whatever someone is carrying, there is a colleague close by who is trained to listen.

Care work asks a lot of people. Looking after the people who look after others is not an extra, it is the job. 💙

Staff said it. We did it. That is what having a voice looks like.

Back to doing things for themselves. 🌷

Most care is about support that keeps going. Our Specialist Care at Home service is different. It is designed to work itself out of a job.

After a fall, an illness or a spell in hospital, our teams work alongside someone to rebuild the confidence and the everyday things they could do before. Making a cup of tea. Managing the stairs. Getting out into the garden again. 🌞

Last year, 176 people finished with us needing no ongoing care at all.

No visits. No rota. Just their own life, back in their own hands. ✨
