390g of carbohydrate. Six grams per kilo. A full day of loading before a biggg training session.
And two hours before I trained, I had 140g of carbs in one sitting.

That number scares a lot of people. It sounds like too much. Like it should leave you feeling heavy, bloated, uncomfortable before you have even started.
It didn't. And it shouldn't.

There is a strategy, no guess work.

I felt fuelled. Light. Ready.
This is exactly what I tell athletes constantly and I wanted to actually live it myself and show you, not just tell you.

Carb loading done properly is not about forcing food down and hoping for the best. It is about consistency across the day, the right foods, and understanding that your body can handle far more than fear tells you it can.

Watch to the end to see exactly how I hit 140g two hours before my session.

I practice what I preach. Always.

Chelsea. Spain's national team. Fertility care and egg freezing for players. And the internet has opinions.
Some are saying it is clubs protecting their own interests, keeping players in the game longer rather than supporting a real career break. Fair concern. Worth taking seriously.

I see it differently.

The value is not the procedure. It is the conversation it forces into the open. Fertility becomes something players are educated about, rather than something they find out about too late.

Too many people assume being fit and healthy is enough. Fertility does not follow that logic. Family planning decisions get quietly pushed back and too many people end up somewhere they did not choose.
Knowledge is power. The more an athlete understands about her own fertility, early, the more informed the choice she gets to make.

Not about telling anyone what to decide. Just making sure they have what they need to decide at all.

Back in camp this week after a few weeks with our new arrival.

And within days, a conversation with one of the players reminded me why the detail matters so much in this work.
We were talking about her creatine intake. She hadn't taken it that morning because there was no apple juice at breakfast β€” that's what she normally takes it with. I said just take it in something else. She said, that's not my normal routine.
She was right to push back.

Habits do not stick because someone explains the science well enough. They stick because of the structure around them. Take away one small piece of that routine and the whole thing can wobble.
This is exactly why nutrition support for elite athletes has to go beyond what to take. It has to understand the routine that holds the habit together.

Good to be back. Good to be reminded why the detail is everything.

Breastfeeding, recovery, training load. Nobody really talks about how to fuel all three.

My wife had our baby four weeks ago. Watching her navigate breastfeeding, recovery, and everything else that comes with it has shown me something up close that I already knew professionally but now understand differently.

This week I also had a call with an elite athlete working through the same thing β€” how to fuel milk supply while managing a training load. Enough energy for lactation. Enough for training and return to performance.

This is exactly the level of detail I work through with the athletes I support β€” building a nutrition approach specific to her, her training, and where she is postpartum. Not a generic plan. A conversation built around her reality.

I became a mum. And women's sport just made history.
Chelsea FC Women launched a first-of-its-kind fertility fund this week β€” giving every player access to personalised fertility support as standard.

The momentum in this space is real. And the nutrition layer is still the missing piece.
That is exactly what I am here to build.

Back. Motivated. Ready.

Two world leading researchers. One message that every female athlete needs to hear.
Energy deficits drive menstrual disturbances. Not just training. Energy intake is the key lever β€” and it is also the key to reversing it.

For athletes thinking about fertility or navigating pregnancy while still training β€” this is where everything starts.

Thank you Mary Jane De Souza and Nancy Williams for research that genuinely moves this field forward.

Yesterday I attended a talk online from Tara Leigh Mchugh, a Canadian world leading researcher in female athlete support.

The focus was the experiences of pregnancy and parenting in high performance sport. Not just athletes. Coaches and support staff too.

The research is clear and emerging. The knowledge gap is real. The need for evidence informed education inside performance environments is significant.

And it maps directly onto what I am seeing too on the ground.

This is the work and days like yesterday remind me exactly why it matters.

PS Massive respect to all female athletes, coaches and support staff who are sharing their experiences, it goes such a long way.

DM is always open for any conversations around this.

The more I learn about pregnancy nutrition, the more i realise how much research is missing for elite athletes specifically.

I am doing a specialist pregnancy nutrition course right now. I work with pregnant athletes inside elite sport every week and I am doing a part time PhD in this space.

All three keep raising the same question- where is the evidence base for what a pregnant elite athlete needs with a full training load trimester to trimester?

The gap is real. It is what drives the work behind the scenes. And exactly why having the right specialist support matters.

DM me if you work with a pregnant athlete or you are one πŸ™I'd love to connect.

Yesterday I spent the day filming content for Healthspan Elite around female specific nutrition, covering topics I am asked about constantly in my work supporting elite athletes.

Cannot share everything yet. But it is coming.

PS
Massive thanks to for running the show behind the scenes. πŸŽ₯
