New research in Mental Health and Social Inclusion: “Beyond Survival: Applying Positive Autoethnography Across Three Conversion Therapy Survivor Accounts” by Matt Broadway-Horner.
This study uses positive autoethnography (PosAE) to examine post-traumatic growth in three survivors of conversion therapy — from Christian, Muslim, and Pentecostal backgrounds — including the first comparative look at gender-specific experiences across these contexts.
Key findings: conversion therapy operates through strikingly similar mechanisms across religious traditions, but le***an survivors face compounded pressures from homophobia and patriarchal control. Recovery unfolds over decades, not months.
The paper also offers practical guidance for clinicians working with survivors, and strengthens the evidence base for comprehensive conversion therapy bans.
