Are varicose veins only cosmetic?

For some people, yes. Many people ask for advice simply because they don't like how their veins look. For others, varicose veins affect how their legs feel day to day.

Symptoms some people notice: Aching or throbbing, often towards the end of the day Heavy, tired legs, particularly after standing Swelling around the ankles Skin changes, such as discolouration or dryness near the ankle

It's worth seeking advice if you have ongoing discomfort, notice changes to the skin around your ankle, or a vein becomes red, warm or tender. If a vein becomes painful, red and swollen, or bleeds, seek medical advice promptly.

An assessment with our Vascular Surgeon can help explain what's going on and which options may suit you.

What are varicose veins?

Veins carry blood back towards the heart, helped by small valves inside them. When these valves don't work as they should, blood can pool and the vein may become enlarged and twisted.

Common signs include: Raised, twisted veins, usually on the legs Aching or heaviness, often worse after standing Swelling around the ankles or lower legs Itching over or around the affected vein

Things that may play a part include family history, pregnancy, long periods of standing, and age.

If you've noticed changes in your legs, an assessment with our Vascular Surgeon can help explain what's going on and which options may suit you.

Thread veins or varicose veins: what's the difference?

Both are veins you can see, but they aren't the same.

Thread veins are fine, flat veins that sit close to the surface of the skin. They may look red, purple or blue, and can appear on the legs, face or hands. For most people they're a cosmetic concern.

Varicose veins are larger, raised and often twisted. They usually appear on the legs, and for some people they can cause aching, heaviness or swelling.

Some people have both. An assessment with our Vascular Surgeon can help find out which type of vein you have and which treatment options may suit you.

Treatment options that may be discussed after your assessment: Sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into the vein, which may then fade over time Thermavein, which uses heat to treat fine thread veins

For some people, varicose veins are more than a cosmetic concern.

Enlarged, twisted veins can cause aching, heaviness or swelling in the legs. For others, the main concern is how they look. Either way, an assessment can help find the cause and the options that may suit you.

Treatment options that may be discussed after your assessment: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), which uses heat to close the affected vein from the inside Foam sclerotherapy, where a foam solution is injected to close the vein Phlebectomy, which removes varicose veins through small incisions

Treatment is guided by ultrasound and carried out by our Vascular Surgeon at our CQC-registered clinic on Rodney Street, Liverpool.

Results can vary between individuals. Treatment suitability will be discussed at your consultation.

Veins that ache, bulge or show through the skin are worth having checked.

Some vein conditions are purely cosmetic. Others can be uncomfortable, or a sign of an underlying circulation problem. An assessment helps establish which it is, and what may help.

Conditions we assess: Varicose veins Thread veins Facial veins Hand veins Arterial disease

Following your assessment, treatment options that may be discussed include endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA), foam sclerotherapy, phlebectomy, and sclerotherapy or Thermavein for thread veins.

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK. Because skin is visible, changes can often be noticed early, and skin cancers are generally easier to treat when they're found early.

The three main types of skin cancer: Melanoma, which may appear as a new or changing mole Basal cell carcinoma, often a pearly lump or a sore that doesn't heal Squamous cell carcinoma, which may be a firm, scaly or crusted patch

Simple ways to protect your skin: Check your skin every month or so, including hard-to-see areas Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and reapply it regularly Seek shade, cover up, and avoid sunburn and sunbeds

If something doesn't look right, trust your instincts. An assessment with our Consultant Dermatologist can give you a clear answer and explain any next steps.

Most moles are harmless. Some are worth a closer look.

If a mole is new, changing or looks different from your others, an assessment can give you a clear answer. Skin cancers are generally easier to treat when they're found early.

It may be worth getting a mole checked if it: Is new and keeps growing Is changing in size, shape or colour Is itchy, painful or tender Bleeds, crusts or oozes Looks different from your other moles

At your appointment, Dr Theodoros Vernikos, Consultant Dermatologist, will discuss your concerns, examine the mole closely and talk you through clear next steps. Those may include monitoring, a biopsy or removal where needed.
