Ever wonder what happens when you mix strength training + rest in midlife? 🩷

Want practical tips to help you navigate perimenopause with more confidence? Follow Yvette • Perimenopause Coach & Nutritionist for realistic nutrition, exercise and mindset strategies in perimenopause.

For years, I thought more exercise was better.

More workouts.
More cardio.
More calories burned.

If I had a free day, I felt like I should be doing something.

But my mindset has changed in my 50s.

Now I understand that my body doesn’t just need to be worked.

It also needs time to recover.Especially as we move through perimenopause and beyond.

Strength training gives your body a reason to:

💪 Build and maintain muscle
🦴 Support bone health
🏋️‍♀️ Build strength
✨ Improve physical capability

But the work doesn’t stop when the workout ends.

Rest is part of the process too.

Your body needs recovery time to repair and adapt to the demands you’re putting on it.

So more isn’t always better.

Better training + enough recovery can be.

For me, that means I don’t need to train every day.

I’m currently strength training up to 3 times a week, while walking daily (more because of our dogs), playing netball once a week, and doing yoga about once a week.

And I’ve learned to appreciate my rest days too.

Rest can look like:

😴 Getting enough sleep
🚶‍♀️ Gentle movement
🧘‍♀️ Yoga or stretching
🌿 Taking a quieter day
🩷 Simply giving your body a break

Recovery is not being lazy.

Because in midlife, exercise isn’t about doing more for the sake of doing more.

It’s about training smarter. Challenge your muscles. Give your body time to recover. Then do it again. 🩷

Here’s the thing…

If you’re eating less, exercising more and still not seeing the changes you want around your middle, the answer may not be to try harder.

Your perimenopause belly isn’t always just about body fat.

Hormonal changes can affect:

🩷 Where your body stores fat
🩷 Digestion and bloating
🩷 Blood sugar balance
🩷 Stress and sleep
🩷 Muscle and metabolism

So instead of constantly trying to shrink your body, start asking:

“What does my body need from me now?”

Because once you understand what’s changing, you can start supporting your body instead of fighting against it.

And that’s exactly what my FREE Peri Belly Blueprint is designed to help you with.

🩷 What if eating less is actually making fat loss harder in perimenopause?

When you were younger, you may have been able to lose weight by simply cutting calories—skipping meals, avoiding starchy carbs like rice, or eating very little during the day.

But here’s the problem…

If you’re constantly under-eating, you can lose muscle, and having less muscle means your body uses less energy.

And then there’s the other side of the equation…

You restrict all day, get incredibly hungry, and suddenly you’re eating 1,000+ calories in one sitting.

That doesn’t mean you’ve failed.

It means your body was hungry.

But regularly going from restriction to overeating isn’t a great long-term strategy either.

Your body will respond so much better when you fuel it consistently with regular, balanced meals throughout the day.

So here’s to fueling your changing body properly. 🩷

If you’re in perimenopause, you might be making this mistake without even knowing it. 🩷

I know you’ve heard that you should aim for 20–30 grams of protein per meal, but do you actually know how to do that?

Want to know one of the biggest changes I’ve made to my nutrition during perimenopause?

👇 Follow Yvette • Perimenopause Coach & Nutritionist for practical, realistic tips to help you navigate your changing body — and keep reading!

You might be starting your day with:

🍞 Toast on its own
🥣 Cereal with milk
🍌 Fruit and coffee
🥐 A pastry and coffee

These foods aren’t “bad”.

But they may not be giving your body enough protein to start the day.

I used to think my breakfast was healthy too.

But I wasn’t really thinking about how much protein I was getting.

I’m Yvette, a Holistic Nutritionist since 2007, and I’ve been navigating perimenopause myself for over five years.

And as I’ve learned more about perimenopause, I’ve realised that what was “healthy” before isn’t always enough to support my body now.

So here are 3 things you can start doing to eat enough protein consistently.

1. START your day with protein.

Include a good source of protein at breakfast rather than relying on toast, cereal or fruit alone.

2. FOCUS on protein at every meal.

Build your meals around a protein source, then add fibre-rich carbohydrates and healthy fats to create a balanced, satisfying meal.

3. ROTATE your protein sources.

Mix things up with eggs, Greek yoghurt, fish, chicken, tofu, beans and lentils to add variety throughout the week.

As we move through perimenopause, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important. Protein helps support muscle maintenance and repair, which play an important role in strength and healthy body composition.

The good news?

You don’t need to give up carbohydrates or completely change what you eat.

Instead, start thinking about what you can add.

Anybody can learn to include more protein in their day, and I’m here to show you how!

🩷 Want to understand why weight gain can happen in perimenopause—even when you haven’t changed how you eat?

One factor you may not be thinking about is muscle loss.

From around age 30, we can lose approximately 3–8% of muscle mass per decade. And often, we don’t notice it at first.

It may show up as:
• Your body feeling softer
• Clothes fitting differently
• Changes in body shape
• Weight becoming harder to manage

Muscle is metabolically active, so maintaining and building muscle can help support your energy expenditure and metabolism.

And as we get older, protecting our muscle becomes even more important.

So during perimenopause, don’t just focus on losing weight.

💪 Focus on maintaining and building muscle.
