You can have very few menopause symptoms—and still be losing bone.

And some of the symptoms you do notice may affect your fracture risk in ways you haven’t considered.

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in my 30s. That experience changed how I think about bone health: it deserves attention long before we feel older or fragile.

With World Menopause Day on 18 October and World Osteoporosis Day on 20 October, here’s the connection I want more women to understand.

Declining oestrogen can accelerate bone loss. But hormones are only part of the picture.

➡️ Feeling dizzy or unsteady? That can increase your risk of falling. Persistent dizziness deserves assessment—rather than assuming it’s menopause or reaching for supplements.

➡️ Feeling weaker? Muscle strength helps you stay steady and provides the forces that stimulate your bones. It matters alongside your bone density.

➡️ Struggling with mood or sleep? Eating adequately, exercising and looking after yourself can become harder. That’s a reason to get support, not another reason to blame yourself.

These connections don’t mean bone loss causes your menopause symptoms—or that supporting your bones will make those symptoms disappear.

They mean your symptoms, strength and bone health belong in the same conversation.

💛 At your next menopause review, ask:
“Given my history, should we assess my bone health and fracture risk too?”

You don’t need to feel old—or have severe symptoms—to deserve that conversation.

Join my free Beyond DEXA masterclass to understand what your bone scan can tell you, what else matters, and how to make informed decisions about your next steps.

You’re watching your weight. But are you noticing whether you’re getting weaker?

We often notice changes in our weight before changes in our strength. Yet everyday tasks—carrying shopping, climbing stairs, lifting a suitcase—can reveal changes the scales cannot.

For bone health, this wider perspective matters. A plan should consider appropriate strength training, nutrition and recovery, alongside individual medical needs.

This carousel highlights three common mistakes: progressing too quickly, relying on supplements alone, and overlooking the factors that affect confidence and consistency.

One practical step: record your progress in a strength exercise you already perform safely. Your ability to do more deserves attention too.

You’ve been working on your bone health. Your spine DEXA comes back higher. Of course you want to celebrate!

And it may be good news—but the number needs context.

🦴 On World Spine Day today, here’s something I want more people to understand: osteoarthritis and other degenerative changes can make spinal bone density look higher on DEXA, without a corresponding improvement in bone strength.

Scoliosis can also make positioning and interpretation more challenging.

This is why I want you to understand your report, rather than simply collect a T-score.

🎓 YOUR DEXA IS NOT YOUR DESTINY

We'll look beyond bone density numbers to understand what really influences fracture risk, why your T-score doesn't tell the whole story, and what you can do to support stronger bones and healthier ageing.

Bone Density vs Bone Quality — what’s the difference?

Most people focus on their DEXA T-score… but density isn’t the whole story.

Two people can have the same bone density yet different fracture risks.

That’s because bone strength depends on both density and quality. Bone quality includes:

✨ Collagen integrity
✨ Internal bone structure, or microarchitecture
✨ The balance between bone breakdown and renewal

Understanding your bone health means looking beyond your T-score and connecting the dots.

In my masterclass, we’ll explore the difference between bone density and bone quality—and why it matters for stronger bones and long-term independence.

“I thought bone scans were something you had at 65.”

But your bones don’t wait for a birthday to change.

You can eat well, exercise and feel perfectly healthy without knowing your bone density.

That doesn’t mean every woman needs an early DEXA. It means your age shouldn’t be the only thing deciding when you have one.

Your menopause history, weight, family history, previous fractures and certain medications all deserve consideration.

One question to ask your clinician:
“Does my personal risk mean I should have a DEXA before 65?”

And if you already have a result, understanding the number is only the beginning.

In my free Beyond DEXA masterclass, we’ll explore what the scan tells you, what it leaves out and how it fits into your wider bone health.

“I’m eating the same. Why has my cholesterol gone up?”

This is one of the most common questions I hear, especially from women around menopause.

Your habits haven’t necessarily changed—but your physiology may have.

Before responding by eating less or cutting out more foods, look at the bigger picture.

Are your meals supporting your muscle? Are you doing resistance training? Are you sleeping well and recovering?

One place to start: plan two strength-training sessions this week, suited to your abilities.

These habits support your metabolic health. Your cholesterol results still deserve a review with your clinician.

You don’t need to punish your body for changing. You need to understand what it needs now.

Did you know that some people may never reach their full potential peak bone mass?

Our bone health takes shape long before menopause. Nutrition, exercise, hormones and genetics all play a part.

But that doesn’t mean it’s too late to care for your bones today.

If you eat well and take supplements, yet your bone density remains low, what else deserves attention?

And what does your bone density scan tell you—and what might it leave out?

To mark World Osteoporosis Day, join me for my FREE online masterclass, Beyond the DXA Scan, on 20 October.

We’ll explore:

• What affects your bones beyond age and menopause.
• Which assessments can help complete the picture.
• How to turn your results into practical, personalised steps.

One useful starting point: if you have low bone density, ask your doctor whether other contributing causes need investigating.

My aim is to help you understand your bone health and feel clearer about your next steps towards staying strong and independent.

Have you ever walked into a room and completely forgotten why you went there?

Or struggled to remember a word you use all the time?

It's easy to start worrying about your memory, especially around menopause.

But here's something we often overlook.

Your brain doesn't work in isolation.

Hormonal changes, poor sleep, stress and even how well you're recovering can all affect concentration and memory.

And sometimes, what we call *brain fog* is partly a sleep problem.

**One thing to try:**

For the next week, keep a consistent bedtime and wake-up time. Pay attention to how refreshed you feel in the morning.

Because not every change we experience after 40 is simply something we have to accept.

Have you noticed changes in your memory or concentration around menopause?

Still thinking strong bones = calcium?

Calcium matters. But one of the biggest mistakes I see in bone health is putting so much attention on one nutrient that we miss the bigger picture.
Your bones respond to far more than calcium: protein, muscle, resistance training, vitamin D, hormones, nutrition, absorption, lifestyle — and your individual health history.
And this is exactly why I don’t want women waiting until osteoporosis appears on a DEXA before becoming interested in their bones.

Especially after 45, the better question isn't simply:
“Am I getting enough calcium?”
It's:
“Am I building a body — and bones — that will keep me strong for the decades ahead?”
I’ll be going much deeper into this in my FREE live masterclass: YOUR DEXA IS NOT YOUR DESTINY.

After 45, I don’t just want women thinking about whether they are healthy today.
I want us thinking about what we’re building for the next 10, 20 and 30 years.
Muscle. Strength. Bone. Metabolic health. Resilience.

And some of those changes can begin quietly — long before we think of ourselves as “getting older.”

This is exactly why I created my new FREE live masterclass: YOUR DEXA IS NOT YOUR DESTINY.

It’s not just for women who already have osteoporosis.

It’s also for women who want to understand their bodies earlier, protect their bones and strength, and become more proactive about how they age.
