Menopause can make blood sugar a lot harder to manage if you’re living with diabetes. But is anyone actually talking to women about how to handle both at once? 🤔

From what the women in this study told researchers, not really.

We were really proud to support this UK-wide survey with , looking at what happens when diabetes and menopause overlap. It’s an area research has barely touched, and the women who took part had definitely felt that gap in their own care.

Yesterday was World Menopause Day, and this one’s a good reminder of why it matters who gets included in research. Guidance can only be as good as the evidence behind it, so that evidence needs to include the people it’s meant to help.

If you’re living with diabetes and going through menopause, this one’s for you.
and explain what the research found, and if any of it sounds familiar, you’re definitely not on your own with it!

Thank you to every woman who gave her time and shared her story with the team 🙏

What do actually look like from the patient's side?

For people living with Alzheimer's and the caregivers supporting them, participation in a Phase 3 trial typically involves a sustained commitment, often over many months. Trials have traditionally been built around what the and the regulators need, with and caregivers brought in much later, if they're brought in at all.

We worked with a global company to change that order for an upcoming Alzheimer's trial, bringing patients and caregivers in before the protocol was finalised. We sat down with them and went through the trial experience properly: what made sense, what didn't, where the gaps in understanding were, where things could be made easier.

What they told us shaped real changes to the trial, closing some of the distance between what's written into a protocol and what it's actually like to live through one.

For , we're sharing the full case study.

Inclusion Week always brings a wave of 'same opportunities for all' messaging, and it comes from a good place. But sameness and fairness aren't quite the same question, especially once you look at how hashtag actually works in practice.

A fair opportunity to take part in a hashtag often comes down to details that have nothing to do with treating people identically: an appointment time that fits around a caring role or a shift pattern, information written in a way that actually makes sense, someone available in the language a person thinks in, a route into a study that doesn't assume everyone can just show up on a weekday morning.

Whether someone ends up in a trial at all can hinge on whether the process was ever built with them in mind, which has a lot more to do with design than with ability or interest...

Twenty people in one trial, thousands in another, different phases, the same drug and the same disease... It's all pretty confusing!

You may have heard of "phase 1, phase 2, phase 3" when it comes to , and each phase is simply answering a completely different question about the treatment.

By the time a treatment's approved, it's been through years of these separate, narrower questions, each one needing its own scale of trial to answer properly. Understanding what each phase is actually checking for hopefully makes that whole process a little less confusing.

What does meaningful engagement with communities actually look like?

Black women in the UK face significantly worse maternity outcomes than white women, including higher rates of pregnancy-related deaths, preterm birth and stillbirth. Yet Black women remain underrepresented in the maternity and neonatal research that could help us understand and address these inequalities.

If research is meant to improve outcomes for Black women, Black women need a real role in shaping that research. Through our work on the NIHR-funded PROMISE study, we helped co-develop a set of Principles of Engagement to involve Black women more inclusively in maternity and neonatal research.

The principles came from what we heard directly from Black women, community representatives and research midwives involved in the study. Community engagement should change how research is done.

Black women in the UK are 2.3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, and experience higher rates of preterm birth and stillbirth. Despite this, they remain significantly underrepresented in the and neonatal that could help close that gap.

We helped lead on the PROMISE study, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, shaping the study design, topic guide and workshop plan alongside our community advisory group, and supporting across our networks.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Professor Jason Arday.

His death has raised questions about racism, representation, accountability and who is afforded grace within our institutions.

We need to keep asking whose voices are heard, whose achievements are questioned, and why some people are held to a different standard.

We are thinking of Jason's family, friends, colleagues and students, and all those who have been affected by what has happened.

Rest in Power, Professor Jason Arday.

It's hot, it's been hot aaand it's going to keep being hot!

But what that actually means depends a lot on where you're standing in it.
