“We honestly don’t know what we would have done without Ruth.” 🥹❤️
This one means so much. A first-time mum and dad from South Africa, no family nearby, and a different midwife at almost every appointment. They knew they wanted a constant by their side, even though they weren’t sure what a doula actually did.
By the end, they were calling me their “life angel.” 😭
I supported them both, from those early hours at home through to the birth centre at Kingston Hospital and the arrival of their September baby. A few calming tricks for managing contractions meant they stayed home until the right moment, rather than rushing in too early.
And the care doesn’t stop at the birth. The check-ins before and after are where so much of the real support happens.
This is why I love what I do. Being a home from home for families who are far from their own. 🏡💛

🌕 Old wives’ tale or midwife magic?
Every doula has a story about a run of babies arriving around the full moon. Labour wards “feel it.” Midwives brace for it. It’s one of the oldest pieces of birth folklore there is 🌙
Here’s the honest truth though - the research doesn’t back it up. Big hospital studies (thousands of births, decades of data) have looked for a link between moon phase and labour onset and found… nothing statistically significant. No full moon baby boom. Sorry, moon 🤷‍♀️
So why does the belief persist? I think it’s less about gravity and more about pattern-spotting - a busy night sticks in your memory more than a quiet one, and if the moon’s out and bright that night, our brains connect the dots. That’s not weakness, that’s just how humans make sense of the unpredictable, wondrous chaos of birth ✨
Babies come when they’re ready - moon, tide, weather, or otherwise. My job is to help you feel supported whenever that moment arrives 🤍
