IMPROVING HIP MOBILITY πŸ¦΄β€‰

Improving hip mobility isn’t just about stretching. We want to develop range, control and strength through that range πŸ“š

Here are 3 examples of exercises we may prescribe to patients, depending on their individual assessment and goals:

1️⃣ LENGTHEN - 90/90 LEAN

Helps improve hip range and tolerance to deeper positions. Stretching has been shown to improve range of motion (Behm et al., 2023)

2️⃣ ISOLATE - BANDED CLAM

Targets the hip abductors and external rotators, helping develop strength and control around the hip (Ebert et al., 2017).

3️⃣ STRENGTHEN - LANDMINE COURTESY LUNGE

Challenges the hip through a greater range while developing strength and control under resistance. Resistance training can improve ROM as well as strength (Kassiano et al., 2023).

The goal?
➑️Access the rangeβ€¨βž‘οΈControl the rangeβ€¨βž‘οΈStrengthen the range

These are just examples of what we might prescribe - the right exercises will depend on your individual assessment, symptoms and goals βœ…

If your hip mobility is limiting your movement, training or performance, get it assessed by one of our expert team πŸ™‚β€β†•οΈβ€‰

The McGill Big 3 πŸ‹οΈβ€‰

Effective, but not magic πŸ™‚β€β†”οΈβ€‰

The curl-up, side plank and bird dog exercises can absolutely be useful exercises for lower back rehab, which is why it’s been so heavily used over the years βœ…

But research suggests that motor-control exercises are not superior to other forms of exercise for low-back pain, but they can produce similar outcomes (Saragiotto et al., 2016; 2023) πŸ§β€‰

So, rather than giving everyone the same β€œBig 3”, we should ask: What exercises are right for you❓

Your symptoms, goals, preferences and current capacity should shape your programme - all things we closely monitor with objective testing πŸ«΅πŸΌβ€‰

Effective doesn’t mean superior. Individualisation matters ⭐️

LOWER BACK ASSESSMENT πŸ”πŸ’ͺ

Lower back pain isn’t just about where it hurts, it’s about understanding how your lumbar spine moves, how strong you are, and how your body responds to different loads and movements βœ…β€‰

That’s why our lumbar assessments combine several key measures:

πŸ“ ROM testing: assessing lumbar range of movement to identify any restrictions, asymmetries or areas that may need further investigation.

πŸ’ͺ Strength testing: using objective strength measures to assess key muscle groups, identify any weaknesses and compare sides where appropriate.

πŸƒπŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ Functional testing: assessing how you move, load and produce force during functional movements to understand how your back performs in more demanding tasks.

We bring all of these findings together to build a clear picture of what’s going on, and importantly, what you need to work on βœ…β€‰

From there, we create a tailored rehabilitation programme designed around your individual goals, symptoms, strength and movement findings, alongside a practical home management programme to keep your rehab progressing between appointments πŸ“ˆβ€‰

No one-size-fits-all approach. Just objective testing, personalised treatment and a clear plan to help you get back to doing what you love πŸ«΅πŸΌβ€‰

RETURN TO SPORT TESTING βš½οΈπŸ‰πŸ“šβ€‰

This week’s CPD session focused on Return to Sport Testing, exploring how we can assess an athlete’s readiness to safely and confidently return to sport following injury βœ…β€‰

We looked at the principles behind return-to-sport testing, how objective measures can support clinical decision-making, and how testing can be adapted to the individual and their specific sporting demands πŸ€β€‰

The session also included a practical element, giving us the opportunity to get hands-on with different testing methods and put the theory into practice. We shared ideas, challenged our thinking and learned from each other along the way πŸ“ˆβ€‰

A really valuable session combining learning, practical application and teamwork - helping us continue to develop our knowledge and clinical skills so we can better support our patients on their journey back to sport πŸ«Άβ€‰

A hamstring injury isn’t just about where it hurts, it’s about understanding how you move, how strong you are, and how your body performs under load βœ…
