🥜 Happy National Nut Day! Nuts can be part of a kidney-friendly way of eating, if you choose wisely and moderate portion size.

🌰 Walnuts, macadamias and pecans are good picks, and a small handful of around 30 to 50g is a sensible serving. Always choose unsalted, either raw or dry-roasted with no added flavours, to keep the salt down.

⚠️ A few to be careful with. Pistachios are particularly high in potassium, and almonds and Brazil nuts are very high in oxalate, which matters if you have a history of kidney stones.

Between Google, Facebook groups, a well-meaning neighbour and that one influencer with a powder to sell, no wonder CKD advice feels like a minefield. 😅

Everyone has a view. Half of them contradict the other half, and you end up feeling less sure than when you started. 🤯

We are kidney dietitians, and we see people caught out by this all the time. So we gathered the kinds of advice that make us raise an eyebrow straight away. Some of them will make you smile. All of them are worth knowing. 🚩

What advice have you heard about CKD that does not sound quite right? Tell us in the comments. You might help someone else spot a red flag before it costs them money or peace of mind. 💬

Happy World Bread Day! 🎉 If you have CKD, choosing what bread can sometimes feel like a cryptic puzzle. 🧩

🌾 Wholegrain or wholemeal bread is a great choice, and the best labels have a short ingredient list, mainly flour, water and yeast.

🔍 Flip the packet over and compare the salt. It varies quite a bit between loaves, and the lower it is, the better.

⚠️ Also look out for added potassium or phosphate additives if you are on a low potassium and/or low phosphate diet.

🚫 And skip protein-fortified breads.

📖 Our blog post on bread and CKD goes through the different types of bread, what to look for on the label and how to bake your own. 🥖

You leave the surgery with a diagnosis, a vague suggestion to keep an eye on things, and a head full of questions you did not quite get to ask. Later, sitting at the kitchen table, they all arrive at once. 💭

We hear this all too often from people with CKD, so we put together some of the questions we wish more people would ask their GP. None of them are awkward or demanding. They simply help you leave with clear answers instead of more worry. 💚

Swipe through to see them. 👉 And if you are newly diagnosed, read our blog post. It walks you through how to prepare for your appointment and where to learn about CKD safely: https://kidneywise.co.uk/blog/first-steps-after-ckd-diagnosis

The problem is knowing which information you can actually trust.

Before long, you’re looking at 12 different pages online and still don’t know what to make for dinner. 🤔

That’s why we write the KidneyWise newsletter. 💚

Each week, we share practical, evidence-based information about kidney nutrition to help you understand what matters without adding to the noise. 📚

It is National Cholesterol Month ❤️, which makes it a good time to ask a simple question. Do you know your cholesterol number?

Your kidneys and your heart are closely linked, and having CKD can raise the chance of heart and circulation problems. 🫀 Cholesterol is one piece of that picture, and it is checked with a simple blood test. 🩸

At your next appointment, ask what your cholesterol is and whether there is anything you need to do about it. 💬

Being told you have CKD and sent home with little more than “eat healthily” and “keep an eye on it” can be a lonely place to be. You sit at the kitchen table afterwards and wonder where on earth to start. 🤔

We are kidney dietitians, and we hear this every single day. So if we had just been diagnosed ourselves, here is what we would do first. Five small habits, and no complete overhaul. 🌱

Swipe through to see them. You do not need to understand everything before you begin, and you do not need to be perfect. One steady change at a time is plenty. 💙

We would love to hear from you too. 💬 What habits have you started since your diagnosis? Share them in the comments. The one that helped you could be the one that helps someone else today.

🥦 It is National Vegetarian Week, and we are celebrating with a question: What is your favourite veggie meal? 🌱

Meat-free meals can be a lovely fit for kidney-friendly eating. 💚 One or two meat-free dinners a week is a great place to start.

Whether yours is a bean chilli, a lentil curry, a tofu stir fry or something your family swears by, share it in the comments. 👇

Someone else with CKD is probably stuck for dinner ideas tonight and would love to see it! 🍽️
