In this week's podcast, we hear all about how epilepsy can result from a combination of factors, including genetics, brain injuries and how the brain develops.

And even when we talk about genetic epilepsies, the picture is often far more complicated than a single gene!

Hear all about it with guest, epileptologist and researcher Prof. Jose Serratosa 🤩🇪🇸! Watch here 👇!

🧠 Imagine being able to identify someone at risk of developing epilepsy - and intervene before they even have their first seizure!

It sounds extraordinary, but advances in our understanding of epilepsy are opening up some fascinating possibilities! 🤩

In our latest Epilepsy Sparks Insights podcast 🎬, now out, we explore:

- why epilepsy develops;
- how earlier diagnosis and surgery could improve outcomes, and;
- whether genetics, precision medicine and new treatments might one day help us prevent epilepsy itself.

And importantly, how can we make sure more people around the world benefit from the treatments already available? 🌍

Hear all about it with guest, epileptologist and researcher Prof. Jose Serratosa 🤩🇪🇸! Watch/listen/read here 👇!

Are you signed up for the Drug-Resistant Epilepsy Course in Palma 🇪🇸?! It's next week (!) in the beautiful Palma de Mallorca 💮, from 6th-8th November, 2026.

The objective of the course is to provide an update on current and future pharmacological treatments and strategies for drug-resistant epilepsies. The target audience is physicians and basic scientists willing to improve their knowledge on the treatment of these most challenging epilepsies. In addition to a series of highly relevant lectures, the course offers tutorials where participants work in small groups with the objective of resolving challenging epilepsy cases. Participants will also be invited to present illustrative cases from their own practice.

Fantastic speakers include:
Manuel Toledo, Jose Serratosa, Torbjörn Tomson, Bernhard J Steinhoff, Jacqueline French, Andres Kanner, Elena Gardella, Guido Rubboli, vicente Villanueva, Rima Nabbout-Tarantino, Patrick Kwan, Heidrun Potschka, Cecilie Johannessen, our founder Torie Robinson, and more!

Many people today are shocked when they hear how far we've come re epilepsy and pregnancy, brain imaging, and openness about epilepsy over the past few decades!

Now:
- we don't tell women that they can't have children*;
- the choice of antiseizure medications has gone from 3 to 20+;
- neuroimaging and understandings of genetics are extraordinary compared to even 10 years ago
- we are working internationally re research and care (eg EpiCARE);
- we understand individual epilepsies far more so can treat them better;
- we talk and educate regarding SUDEP to minimise risk
- stigma has reduced - particularly in high-income countries

Hear all about it and positive hopes for the future with guest, retired epileptologist and researcher Prof. Torbjörn Tomson 🤩🇸🇪! Watch/listen/read here 👇!

👰‍♂️❌ Preventing marriage to prevent pregnancies. That was once the thinking behind laws restricting women with an epilepsy!*

Despite current challenges, we have come so far over the past 40 years when it comes to epilepsy recognition, treatment, prevention, approaches, and acceptance.

There's a very long way to go but we much appreciate efforts to date!

In this week's Epilepsy Sparks Insights podcast, retired epileptologist and current researcher Prof. Tobjörn Tomson 🤩 from the Karolinska Institutet 🇸🇪 reflects upon history and his work in helping women with an epilepsy, pregnancy, and SUDEP education and risk minimisation. Out tomorrow!

🧠😔 Therapeutic nihilism is too common when it comes to epilepsy. It'd experienced by people with an epilepsy, carers, and even clinicians.

But why?

〰️ Sometimes we can all get too tired of trying; 😴
〰️ Sometimes we are worried that any changes in treatment will worsen things; 😬
〰️ Sometimes people are so depressed that they don't think they are worth it; 😔
〰️ People may have lost hope; 😣
〰️ In some countries there are monetary or physical restrictions 💵🌍

It's awful and probably more common than we realise. So, let's challenge things!

Hear all about it and hopes for the future, from our Epilepsy Sparks Insights podcast guest epileptologist Dr. Bernhard Steinhoff 🤩🇩🇪! 👇

Did you know that some people get angry when they find out they don't have an epilepsy?! 😠 Or that the most common day for a seizure in those whose seizures are usually controlled is New Years Day?! 🍾🥱

Our star guest Prof. Bernhard Steinhoff 🤩🇩🇪 explains the interesting journey that many people affected by epilepsy can go through, plus:

〰️ What is great epilepsy care?
〰️ Using the right medications
〰️ Capacity of a neurologist

It sounds awful - but too many people - clinicians and those with an epilepsy - accept that seizures are destined to be uncontrolled. 🥺

E.g 🗣️ "I still have some seizures, but I’m okay.”

When did this become a reason to leave treatment unchanged?

In this week’s Epilepsy Sparks Insights podcast 🎬, epileptologist Prof. Bernhard Steinhoff 🤩🇩🇪 challenges “therapeutic nihilism” - when ongoing seizures are met with no further action.

The answer isn’t just more medication. Quality of life matters, and treatment itself can become part of the burden!

This is a great chat about:
〰️ keeping expectations high
〰️ listening, and;
〰️ having a plan B when plan A isn’t working!
