Yesterday was World Menopause Day, and it’s a conversation we want to keep going well beyond one date.

Perimenopause and menopause can bring joint pain, tendon trouble, stiffness and changes in bone health. Too often these symptoms get brushed aside or put down to age. They deserve proper assessment, and physiotherapy has a real role to play.

We’re delighted to share that Lucy Metcalf is joining the Physio Remedies team on 2 November. Lucy is a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist and Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy, with a particular interest in menopause and in rehabilitation during and after cancer treatment, including menopause brought on by treatment itself.

We’ll be developing our menopause service with Lucy over the coming months. If you’ve been told to simply put up with your symptoms, we’d be glad to talk.

How is your lower back pain actually affecting you?

Not just the pain rating out of ten. The real-world impact on your sleep, your work, your sport, your mood.

It has been going on for months and is not improving
You have tried rest, you have tried exercises, and perhaps a course of treatment that helped initially before the improvement stopped. You are beginning to wonder whether this is simply something you have to manage rather than resolve.

It is affecting your sleep and your sport
You cannot find a comfortable position at night. Running, cycling, or training has had to stop or be significantly reduced. The things that keep you well physically and mentally are no longer accessible.

You cannot get through a working day without pain
Back pain from sitting is a constant presence. You are shifting position every twenty minutes, standing at your desk, moving around the office. By afternoon your concentration is gone.

You have had treatment elsewhere and stopped progressing
You are better than you were at the worst point, but you cannot get back to the activities that matter. You may have had a scan report that left you more anxious than informed. That gap between where you are and where you want to be is precisely where we specialise.

If any of this sounds familiar, we would love to help.

Neck pain is one of the most common reasons people come to see us, and also one of the most undertreated. πŸ’™

A lot of people have tried massage, some stretches, maybe a new pillow. The symptoms ease for a few days and then come back. That pattern usually means the underlying cause has not been properly identified or addressed.

Here is what our approach actually involves:

Assessment: We take a full history, including what set the pain off, what makes it worse, what eases it, what has already been tried, and what your working day and daily demands actually look like. We assess cervical and upper thoracic joint mobility level by level, rather than treating the neck as a single unit. We screen for neurological involvement and neural tension, which matters particularly if you have symptoms travelling into the arm, hand or fingers. We look at deep cervical flexor control, and at the specific postures, loads and movements from work or sport that consistently provoke your symptoms.

Treatment: Manual therapy to restore joint mobility and reduce muscle guarding. A targeted exercise programme covering deep cervical flexor endurance, first rib mobility, thoracic mobility and scapular control. Neural mobilisation for patients with nerve root involvement. Specific, practical workstation and habit guidance, because advice that is too general rarely gets implemented.

Something worth knowing: neck and shoulder muscles are among the first structures in the body to respond to elevated cortisol. This is why neck pain is often worse on Monday morning and better after a weekend away. For many patients, stress management is as relevant to treatment as any manual therapy.

That is why breathwork is part of how we treat neck pain. Our physiotherapist Phil Harris is an Oxygen Advantage Advanced Instructor and works with patients on functional breathing to help manage the stress and anxiety that keep the neck and shoulders on high alert. You can read more about Phil here: https://physioremedies.com/philip-harris-physiotherapist

If you are tired of temporary relief, we would love to help get to the bottom of it.

An educational and informative way to spend a Friday.

Sarah Lawson spent today at the Innovation in Sports Medicine Conference 2026, organised by Sports Doctors Network, alongside Paul Martin and Jane Baker.

The day brought together sports doctors, orthopaedic surgeons and physiotherapists from across London to look at where sports medicine is heading: how injuries are diagnosed, how recovery is measured, and how the different specialities work together to get people back to what they love doing.

Thank you to the organisers for a well-run day, and it was great to spend it with colleagues from Grosvenororthopaedicpartners, Fortius Clinic and Opus Biological.

If your neck and back have started protesting since the summer ended, you are not alone. πŸ’™

Returning to full-time desk work after months of more varied movement is one of the most common triggers for musculoskeletal symptoms we see in clinic at this time of year. It is rarely one bad posture that causes the problem. Symptoms develop because we stay in the same position for too long, especially when the workstation does not support us well and the body has not yet adjusted to the sustained load of a full working day.

Our founder Sarah Lawson has just published a new practical guide covering everything you need to know:

How to actually set up your chair rather than accepting it however you found it. Screen height: why too low is far more common than too high, and what to do about it. The forearm-sweep test: a simple way to create three reach zones on your desk calibrated to your own body. Laptops and tablets: portable, but not designed for prolonged sitting. What to do instead. Movement: why even a well-arranged workstation will not protect you if you stay completely still. When symptoms need a physiotherapy assessment rather than just a new piece of equipment.

Sarah also offers more complex workstation assessments in person for workplaces within around a 15-minute walk of The Lansdowne Club, or online for those further away.

Well worth a read, and worth sharing with anyone who has been struggling since they came back to their desk.

We love sharing reviews like this one. And this one is particularly special. πŸ’™

Five years as a patient at Physio Remedies. Long-term neck, lower back, and hip pain that is now gone altogether. A tailored fitness and exercise plan in place. Four stone lost and, in the patient's own words, feeling so much healthier and happier.

"Sarah and Naomi have literally made me a new man. They are the best, nicest and most professional I have ever been to. Thank you."

This is exactly what we are here for. Not just resolving the immediate pain, but understanding the whole picture and supporting someone to feel genuinely well, for the long term.

To this patient: thank you for trusting us with your health for five years. It is a privilege we do not take lightly.

If you or someone you know has been managing long-term pain and does not know where to turn, our team at Physio Remedies would love to help.

From desk workers to elite athletes. Thousands of shoulders treated. One consistent standard of care. πŸ’™

Shoulder problems are one of the most common, and most complex, musculoskeletal presentations we see at Physio Remedies. The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which also makes it one of the most vulnerable.

Our team has treated shoulder conditions across every level of demand: office workers dealing with chronic stiffness and pain, weekend sport players managing rotator cuff injuries, and elite athletes competing at Olympic, Commonwealth, World Games, and professional rugby level.

The same depth of clinical knowledge that supports elite sport performance is applied to every patient who walks through our door, whatever their starting point and whatever their goal.

Real experience. A deeper understanding. πŸ’™

Have you tried physiotherapy before without getting the results you were hoping for? You are not alone, and it does not mean the problem cannot be resolved.

A significant number of patients who come to us at Physio Remedies have already had treatment elsewhere. In many of those cases, the missing piece was not more treatment, but a more accurate understanding of what was actually causing the problem in the first place.

Here is what every assessment at Physio Remedies includes:

A full 60 minute initial appointment. No rushed sessions. We take the time to understand the complete picture before agreeing any treatment plan.

A senior specialist physiotherapist only. Every clinician at Physio Remedies has been qualified for at least 18 years and specialises in a specific area of the body. You will see the same clinician from your very first appointment through to discharge.

A clear diagnosis. We identify what is driving your pain, not just where it hurts.

Objective movement testing. We use VALD Dynamometry and ForceDecks to give us precise, measurable data on your strength, balance and functional performance, removing the guesswork from both diagnosis and progress tracking.

A personalised rehabilitation plan, built around your lifestyle, your sport, and your long-term goals.

Access to specialist technology including Focused Shockwave Therapy using the Piezowave2 system, Blood Flow Restriction Training, and COMPEX where clinically appropriate.

A truly collaborative approach. If you have been referred by a GP, surgeon, or consultant, we work closely with them throughout your care, keeping them informed and involving them if progress plateaus or a change of direction is needed. We do not keep going regardless. We review, communicate, and find the best path forward together.

If you are ready for an assessment that genuinely gets to the root of your pain, our team is here to help.
