This little one had started waking every two hours again… and Mum really needed some help 💤

I’ve been treating Emilio since he was a tiny baby and this time Mum brought him back because his sleep had suddenly gone completely off track.

At 14 months he was in that tricky transition between naps. He was becoming overtired, struggling to settle at bedtime and then waking around every two hours throughout the night.

When babies and toddlers become very overtired, their nervous systems can sometimes get stuck in that wired but tired state. They desperately need sleep but their bodies are finding it really difficult to switch off and settle.

And you can actually see some of that happening in this session.

Here I’m using very gentle palpation techniques around key areas of Emilio’s central nervous system, helping to settle and regulate a nervous system that had become stuck in that wired, overtired state.

At the beginning you can see that he’s quite sensitive to the treatment. He arches away, wriggles and has plenty to say about what I’m doing!

But as the session continues you can see him begin to soften and accept the work. He’s still beautifully vocal, but it feels different, almost as though he’s letting things go.

And eventually he completely settles and snuggles into me. ❤️

Once his nervous system had settled, he was able to do the important bit himself and settle back into sleep.

And then I got this lovely message from Mum afterwards…

His sleep had gone completely back to normal.

After a week of waking every two hours, he was sleeping again and continues to do so 😊

Sometimes during big developmental transitions, little nervous systems just need a bit of help finding their way back to calm. 🤍

When a baby keeps coming off the breast or seems to be “gnawing” rather than maintaining a deep latch, tension through the jaw, mouth, head and body may be contributing.

During this session, I could feel that her latch around my gloved little finger was quite shallow. As I gently worked with the tension around her jaw and the back of her head, I also encouraged her to engage more fully and practise a deeper latch.

By the end, you can see and feel the difference. Her mouth draws my finger in more deeply and her latch becomes much stronger.

This was only one small part of her Craniosacral therapy treatment. I also worked with the tension throughout her body, helping her whole system to relax and organise.

Straight after the session, she went on to the breast, stayed latched without coming off once and had a huge feed.

And this was her afterwards, full, deeply relaxed and fast asleep. 💛

Before babies can calm themselves, they rely on us.

Not just for feeding, changing and comfort, but for regulation.

A baby’s nervous system is still developing. They learn about safety through repeated experiences of being soothed, held, comforted and connected.

This doesn’t mean we need to be calm all the time.

It means that when we can find our way back to calm, we help them find theirs too.

Before babies learn to calm themselves, they borrow calm from us. ❤️

We often think regulation means being calm all the time.

But that’s not realistic.

Life is often really stressful.

Children are challenging.

Things go wrong.

We all get overwhelmed sometimes.

Regulation isn’t about never struggling.

It’s about recognising when we’re off balance and knowing what helps us find our footing again.

The goal isn’t to stay regulated all the time.

The goal is knowing the way back.❤️
